Thought on the name Aurora?

I feel like this is the right now for our second DD

DP liked it when we discussed it earlier in the pregnancy but now he said he's worried it's like a stripper name

I don't think it is at all, please let me know your thoughts?

If I’m being honest, it’s one of my least favourite names. I find it too princess-y, and it seems a bit faddy. However, obviously none of that matters if you and your partner love it!

But her partner doesn’t and I think that’s really the bottom line here oP: you can’t expect him to call his dd a name he associates with a stripper. It’s just all wrong.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/09/2024 23:53

Not a stripper name at all imo- it is a Disney Princess name though with a soft sound so feels a bit frillier than your typical strong Greek/Roman Goddess name to me (so no Diana, Juno, Gaia, Athena, Artemis etc).

But if she turns out not to be a girly girl, she can just be known as Rory instead. And Aurora is popular enough that there should be no issues with spelling or pronunciation (unless you can’t pronounce your R’s like Jonathan Ross which would be unfortunate…). So I say go for it OP - and as a bonus it has a lovely dual meaning in both the Goddess and the gorgeous Aurora Borealis.

I think it's awful. 😬

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2024 22:26

I hate it. It's such an ugly sounding name. Same goes for Rory.

No it's not!

RogersOrganismicProcess · 30/09/2024 02:22

Aurelia is much nicer.

Aurora sounds so try hard that it almost has the opposite effect. I agree with the princessy description- regressive and unhelpful.

TennesseeTipsy · 30/09/2024 02:37

No it's not!

It's a matter of opinion. I think it's awful and agree it's a very ugly sounding name. Some people will like it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MWFan · 30/09/2024 03:10

I don't like it at all, I agree it's an ugly sounding name.

SusiSlippers · 30/09/2024 05:18

If you like it go for it. It’s not for me but it’s nobody else decision what you name your child.

Moreteaandchocolate · 30/09/2024 05:19

I like it for a child but I’d feel uncomfortable introducing myself as Aurora as an adult,

MistyF · 30/09/2024 05:30

I love Aurora

lololulu · 30/09/2024 06:39

How do you pronounce it

Au Or Ra?

OwlishPeering · 30/09/2024 06:43

Dreadful. Both for the Disney twee aspect, but also because it sounds like a motorbike revving.

HopsiclePopsicle · 30/09/2024 07:22

Twee and insubstantial.

My 9 year old is Aurora and I love it now just as much as I loved it when I was pregnant. Her nickname has been Rory since birth which I never expected but I quite like it as it's quirky and normally given for a boy. She likes being called both!

Yes he loves the nickname Rory, I also like Rora

Not a fan. It seems like the kind of name a child would pick.

Funnily enough my 3yo DD loves it 😂

I like it, def not a stripper name!
popular round here but not overly so

i I think it depends on where you are in the Uk to some extent though. In some accents it doesn’t sound nice.

not the same but I have a French friend called “Aurore” and NOBODY can say that properly!

Where abouts in the U.K. are you?

I saw a reel on insta about names and how their pronounced in different areas, me and DP are southern but we live in Yorkshire

Although I have met 2 other Aurora's in the last few weeks, both adorable and I think it's helped reaffirm how much I love the name

I hate that Rory is becoming a girls' name,

It suits both IMO

I loved the name River when I was pregnant with my first and if I'd had my way, we'd have used it whether my DD had been a boy or girl. DP didn't like it though.

I think some names like Jessie and Alex suit both sexes

Weirdly I know several Auroras under 5 - I quite like it as a name but it strikes me as one of those that people think are unusual but then there's three in a class...

No I've spent enough time on baby name lists to know it's quite popular now 😂

I think if it weren't I'd be more wary of using it

@RedRobyn2021 wish I'd not commented seeing the number of people slagging the name off!!! Haha

Don't worry I've seen threads saying people hate the name I picked for my 3yo and it's actually perfectly lovely (and popular) so you just can't please some people 😂

Disney Princess comes to mind

FiveDuckGyoza · 30/09/2024 07:55

I think it’s the sort of name which the child herself is likely to find difficult to pronounce as she learns to speak (I think many struggle with the R sound to begin with) so I think it’s unfair on that ground alone. Plus naming a child after a Disney Princess is putting her in a certain category which I would be reluctant to force on a female. It sets her up with a particular image in my opinion.

Ignore the negative comments. It's a beautiful name 😊 and don't regret naming my daughter it.

FlapsofFury · 30/09/2024 08:05

It's really cute, but that's the problem. As an adult I don't want a cute name.

SallyWD · 30/09/2024 08:09

Sorry to those who love it but I really don't. It's not a particularly nice sound and is quite a mouthful.
