Turkish girls names that work in the UK?

Not sure what we're having yet but starting to think about names for our half Turkish / half British baby and would prefer a Turkish name that will work in the UK.

We've got a few boys names we like but struggling with girls names.

Don't want anything beginning or ending with the letter 'A' as will be too similar to DD1. Nothing with the letter 'C' in it or any special characters from the Turkish alphabet (ç, ș, I, ģ)

Kind of like Emel or Emine (pronounced Em-een-eh) with nn Emmy as a bit of a tribute to my best friend of 35 years, Emma) - would love to hear honest opinions on that as not planning to discuss with anyone IRL

Open to other suggestions? I feel like I've seen hundreds of Turkish girls names but maybe I've missed the perfect one!

I think there was another similar post recently. Melis is nice and close to Melissa. Aylin or Yasmin maybe. Not similar to English but easy to pronounce spell: Elif, Nejla, Emsal, Dilan, or Derya.

girljulian · 02/09/2024 15:34

I really like Elif. Lots of people will recognise it because of the writer Elif Shafak, and even if not, it's easy to say.

Yasmin?

Bitteralmond · 02/09/2024 15:36

@girljulian I cross-posted with you, but very similar choices!

I grew up with a girl named Merve which I always thought was quite a pretty name.

I know a dog walker whose little granddaughter (Turkish dad) is named Mavi, which is so pretty (to me).

Elif
Ekin
Nur

Bitteralmond · 02/09/2024 15:42

@TheLadyIsAVamp I like it too, but in Britain people won't understand that it is pronounced Merv-e, and will just call her 'Merv' which isn't so great.

sel2223 · 02/09/2024 15:50

We have close friends with daughters Elif and Mavi

SIL is Merve

Our DD1's middle name is Jasmine

Don't want a name ending in 'A'

@sel2223 Sorry missed the 'a' ending bit (trying to work at the same time). I like Selvi or Selin.

My husband is Turkish and we actually found the opposite and struggled with boys names! So much so that we only ever had one on the list.... Girls names we came up with that fit your brief are Sibel, Safiye/Sofia and Cennet. We would have gone with Sofia but had a boy in the end!

Johaanah · 02/09/2024 22:06

Dilara?

frecklejuice · 02/09/2024 22:07

I can't believe you are finding boy names easier than girls!

So many pretty girl names.. admittedly a lot end in 'a' though 🤷🏼‍♀️

Esin
Ecem
Ebru
Ayse is such a pretty name (I know you said no characters!)

For boys we could only come up with Eren & Emre

Layla or Leyla
Azra
Sofia
Ada
Alara
