Turkish girls names that work in the UK?

sel2223 · 02/09/2024 15:25

Not sure what we're having yet but starting to think about names for our half Turkish / half British baby and would prefer a Turkish name that will work in the UK.

We've got a few boys names we like but struggling with girls names.

Don't want anything beginning or ending with the letter 'A' as will be too similar to DD1. Nothing with the letter 'C' in it or any special characters from the Turkish alphabet (ç, ș, I, ģ)

Kind of like Emel or Emine (pronounced Em-een-eh) with nn Emmy as a bit of a tribute to my best friend of 35 years, Emma) - would love to hear honest opinions on that as not planning to discuss with anyone IRL

Open to other suggestions? I feel like I've seen hundreds of Turkish girls names but maybe I've missed the perfect one!

Female names in many cultures end with A.... it doesn't make them sound the same in any way...

Sofia and Nadia
Layla and Alara
Isra and Seda
Lina and Ada

You should just pick a name you like.

I’ve always loved Elif.

Melike, Serpil.

Taught a Turkish girl called Eliz once , thought her name was beautiful. It's been mentioned already but I've always loved Dilara rolls off the tongue.

Thank you so much for the suggestions.

The difficulty is that we are currently living in Turkiye and know a lot of mixed Turkish/British or Turkish/European families so a lot of the nicest names have already been used (a lot)..... also lots of girls in the family too! It shouldn't matter since we are moving back to the UK next year but it's a typical small community and people would be funny about 'copying' a name (I know many on here will say so what but I'd just rather not, thank you)

Our DD1's name ends in an 'ra' sound and anything with that or 'la' just sounds too similar when I sound it out.

My husband is Turkish and we actually found the opposite and struggled with boys names! So much so that we only ever had one on the list.... Girls names we came up with that fit your brief are Sibel, Safiye/Sofia and Cennet. We would have gone with Sofia but had a boy in the end!

We were exactly the same in our first pregnancy, found loads of girls names we liked but really struggled with boys.

This time round, we both pretty much agreed on one boys name straight away and we have a couple of others we think are 'ok'

But girls names.....we're really struggling with! The names we didn't use last time have all since been used by people we know. I absolutely LOVE Sofia by the way, just worry about it being too common.

Your own suggestions of Emel or Emine are both really, really lovely. Personally I'd go with one of those.

NeonGiraffe · 03/09/2024 07:07

Just saw your most recent post, Sofia is also really great. You have great taste in names :)

When it comes to popular names I remember going with the opinion of well I know a load of people who picked names that could be considered unusual when pregnant and then ended up with 4 of the same name in their child's class!

I'm sure whatever you pick in the end will be lovely, but you are right about the community being quite... insular at times. I haven't seen people having problems with children having the same name, just seen it as something that can be expected to happen because there are only so many to use.

I would say that I personally wouldn't be able to use Elif because there are a number of restaurants in Liverpool with the name, and that's very close to us!

Nuray (pronounced nuh-rye)
Narin
Nehrin
Evren

Thank you for your suggestions, Evren is our middle name choice if we have a boy

Oh that’s lovely to hear! Such a beautiful gender neutral name.

Names that are common are common for a reason. Sofia is a lovely name and it works in a lot of countries, not just the UK and Turkey.

Ekin Sue

Dutchesss · 03/09/2024 13:29

I also love Elif but it's often associated with elephant.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 03/09/2024 16:24

I think the name Dilara is beautiful

GirlInTheMirror27 · 03/09/2024 16:36

I’ll admit, I’m a huge fan of Magnificent Century so… there’s a theme with my suggestions.

Ayse - love this name
Cennet - feels strong
Hatice
Mihrimah
Hurrem - obs

Oh really? I've never heard any association with an elephant!
I always just hear 'A leaf'

I like Ayșe and Cennet but they've both got special characters that we want to avoid unfortunately
