Oakley for a girl?

verityrosa · 25/08/2024 21:13

I’ve just found the baby name board and I’m new here. 💜
can I ask people’s opinions of the name Oakley for a girl please? And reasons for disliking it, if you do!
Does it go with sisters Scarlett and Bella?

thank you 💕

Other names on the list:
Romy
Willow
Fleur
Faith

Sorry don't like Oakley but love all these...especially Willow.

You might like Faye too

verityrosa · 25/08/2024 21:38

With the name Romy, can anyone think of possible teasing? Any negative associations? Do you know any?

Faye / Fay is the middle name 😅 or Iris (or both) definitely not with Faith, which would just be Faith Iris

Oakley - reminds me of furniture
Romy - really like it
Willow - was a hugely popular dogs name a few years back around me but has become popular for children in the last 2 years. I'm not a fan
Fleur - absolutely adore!
Faith - I like it but prefer Romy or Fleur

Fleur has been on my list since my first girl, 11 years ago. It’s likely to be the name I will wish I would have used but just wasn’t brave enough to use it. 😭

I like Romy - no negative associations that I’m aware of. Willow is a good name too. I can’t deal with the Fleur/bleurgh thing personally and, to me, Oakley is a brand (sunglasses and hoodies).

I chose a name I absolutely love that people either love or hate when they hear. Some people visibly turn their nose up at it but I still absolutely love it and it really suits her personality. Go with what you love.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 25/08/2024 21:58

I like all your other suggestions, especially Faith, Fleur and Iris. Romy is fine . But Oakley is horrible. There's a "celebrity" dachshund called Oakley and I even dislike it for him.

I can’t believe I hadn’t even thought of the brand, until this post! It was my husband’s suggestion, which was a bit surprising because he usually suggests names like Rebecca, Georgina, Harriet (which aren’t really names that I like, with the exception of Harriet as I quite like Hattie)

I only know of a little boy called Oakley so I think of it as a boys name. Names are very much a personal choice though and you won't please everyone, so pick a name you love OP.

I need to know who the celebrity dachshund Oakley belongs to 😅🤣

@verityrosa Why do you need to be brave to use Fleur? It’s a standard name! Willy Willow isn’t that great but it’s very common!

sleepwithblanket · 25/08/2024 22:04

Oakley is a mining town near where i live. It’s a bit rough. A no for me. I like Willow. I don’t know any children called Willow, only a Labrador.

verityrosa · 25/08/2024 22:05

This will sound really horrible, but I never truly loved the name Scarlett. I liked it as it’s actually my middle name (Not Rosa) and growing up I wished I had been called Scarlett and not Verity. But it was the only name at the time we both ‘liked’, except Fleur which we both loved but chose not to use. Makes no sense I know! I couldn’t imagine Scarlett being anything else now, but don’t want to use a name that we don’t love this time.

We have very similar taste.
I named my horses my favourite names (silly me) before I thought about having kids.
I have a Fleur and a Willow (plus a Freya and Cora)
I've never met either as people yet! I wouldn't say you needed to be brave to use Fleur! X

I’m not even sure how to explain it really, as it’s silly. But haven’t ever met a Fleur, and like on this thread, people have said it sounds awful in their accent, or sounds like ‘bleurgh’ and I just wonder if it’s still a bit ‘out there’ and if it’s more of a pretty name on paper and not a name our daughter would thank us for. Feels like a bit risky I suppose 😂

Remind me of Ned Flanders from The Simpsons ("Okily Dokily"). Sorry...

You have such beautiful girls names. Do you ever find anyone not being able to pronounce Fleur? Do you have any nicknames? Not that it needs any of course 💜

Oh wait! Do you mean your horse is called Fleur? I might have read that wrong 😂

Oakley is a village near me so it would be a no for me too. Some of your other choices are lovely.

sanityisamyth · 25/08/2024 22:13

Horsebox manufacturer

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 25/08/2024 22:14

Oakley just doesn't feel like a name to me (I know it is lol)

I really like fleur

Chasmofdoom · 25/08/2024 22:16

It’s my children’s surname, I don’t think it works well as a first name. Well, it would have been a bit shit for them anyway 😆

WhiskersPete · 25/08/2024 22:17

Romy is beautiful.

Oakley is awful.
