Alice or Alys

Middle name will be Catherine Victoria

While I adore Alys as I think it looks the prettiest written down (and it always feels quite traditional to me as I’ve seen it in a lot of historical novels) - if you aren’t in Wales I’m just not sure it’s worth the hassle of always having to spell it. Outside of Wales/Welsh borders she won’t even be able to say “Alys spelt the Welsh way” as many people will still look blank. Alice is Top 100 in at least a dozen different countries so will give her an easier life imo.

Alice is really pretty. Alys would make people falter over how it's said!

Outside of Wales, people may not recognise it as Alice and pronounce it as something like Aleeze. That may or not be a concern for you.

I’m of Welsh parentage and there are lovely Welsh names throughout my wider family. I used two of them for middle names for my daughters, entirely raised in England, and although it hasn’t been as much of a problem as if they were first names, they always have to clarify the spelling when full names are required especially when it is happening verbally. Added to their unusual surname via my husband, I wish I had paused a little more thought about this.

Also agree Alice unless you have Welsh heritage. Culturally inappropriate otherwise, saying this as a Welsh person.

Also Alice goes with the middle names, very pretty combo.

I have a good friend called Alys and I think it's really pretty and looks lovely written down!

However I would personally go for Alice ad that'd the best known version - as someone with an unusual name, I do love my name but having to spell it every time gets a bit boring... as others have said, if you're based in Wales it should be no problem but otherwise definitely Alice 😊

They are equally nice (and pronounced the same I think), and I don't think you have to have a Welsh connection to use Alys.

However with the middle names Catherine Victoria using the standard English spellings I think it might be better to use Alice to fit in with them.

I didn't know Alys was Welsh. I always think of it as medieval. It looks pretty and it's hardly a lot of letters to spell out so I'd go with it. Loads of names have I and y versions. Lynda. Martyn etc

Personally I prefer Alice, but Alys is a perfectly legitimate spelling. I think it depends on baby's heritage OP. Alys could be a lovely nod to that, if you're Welsh or live in Wales. Otherwise, I'd opt for Alice.

I had a friend called Alys in the states and it was pronounced Al-eese. So it would get mispronounced. In fact I would not assume it was meant to sound like Alice.
I quite like Ellis though for a girl.

Alys is the Welsh spelling. But if I lived outside of Wales I’d go with Alice.

Alys is a very, very old Welsh name. Ignorant of people to say it's daft or clunky.

I think Alice with those middle names.

I do like Alys though... despite or perhaps because it seems like the default name for a witch or similar in books and films. (Just checked the spelling of the mysterious woman at Harrenhal in house of dragons...yup, Alys.)

As someone who has had to spell my name every single time I deliberately gave my own DC normal/easily spelt names..
A friend told me she was going to call her DD 'Alys with a y'. I told her that would be her name! Every time you introduce her (or when she's older and telling people her name) it'll be 'Alys with a y...'

If you ask me, Alys is weird. No idea why "Alys" even exists when its a perfectly good old school English name and there is a perfectly good traditional English spelling available. (Someone on here said Alys its Welsh - sorry if I offend any Welsh people but it doesn't sound like the OP is Welsh).

So, basically, if you are English, it should be Alice. If you are Welsh, Alys. Simple!
