Lois?

What are your thoughts?

I like strong feminine names, classic, old-fashioned, and not too trendy.

I don't know anyone called Lois in real life but like the association with Lane and noted an Olympian athlete with the same name.

Concerned about risk of frequent mispronunciation. We're not Welsh.

How do you pronounce that? Is it similar to Lewis, Louis or Louise, not a name I have come across before?

Low-iss

Except in Wales where it’s Loyce, which is awful, but contained to Wales.

It’s a biblical name, despite sounding rather modern.

Heavenlyhoumous · 18/08/2024 00:29

This is our number one at the moment so love it. Some family have said its a bit plain or too associated with family guy but we don't think so. I know one who is 16.

WetBandits · 18/08/2024 00:50

Lovely name. I only know two: one is 30, the other is in her 80s, so it’s not super popular but not uncommon either!

newyear2024 · 18/08/2024 00:56

I hear it in peter griffins voice 🤣 but I like it

Lois is strong, feminine and known but not too popular.
Lois rhymes with 'show us'.

I know two very successful women called Lois, both also skilled at craft/art.

DacwMamYnDwad · 18/08/2024 13:11

It's pronounced more like Loyce in many countries, the jeans brand is Spanish.
In France, it's Loïs (Lo-eece). @theduchessofspork .

It's popular in Wales. I prefer the Loyce pronunciation.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/08/2024 13:34

Great name! I teach a lovely 12yo Lois. She might be the only one I've taught in 30 years actually.

Sure, but the UK it’s only Wales that’s the outlier, which is all that’s really relevant to the OP.

DacwMamYnDwad · 18/08/2024 14:37

But it's a popular name in Wales but not so much elsewhere in the UK. OP said she's not Welsh but doesn't say they are not in Wales.

My daughter is called Lois. She's 24 & a very talented artist.

jusqualafin · 18/08/2024 15:38

It strongly reminds me of Malcolm in the Middle, but I don't imagine a lot of people would have that association especially outside my age group.

Barryplopper · 18/08/2024 15:40

Adorable name x

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/08/2024 15:41

Lois is a great name

Elizabeth110100 · 18/08/2024 16:09

Love it. It suits a little girl and an older woman.

shoopshoopdedoo · 18/08/2024 17:06

Like it!

ThePittts · 18/08/2024 17:14

My Grandmother was Lois, love the name

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 18/08/2024 17:45

Love it, if I had another (not going to happen) I'd be tempted to use it.

So? She’s citing Lois Lane so we know how she wants it said. Which is how anyone in the UK outside of Wales would say it.

CruCru · 19/08/2024 11:44

I like this but I would pronounce it Loyce (because that is how the Lois I know pronounces it). How much will it annoy you if people pronounce it differently to how you do? Because that will happen sometimes, people are annoying.

sel2223 · 19/08/2024 11:46

You learn something new everyday..... I've never heard Lois pronounced any other way but Low-Iss

DacwMamYnDwad · 19/08/2024 13:10

@sel2223 , it's a name from the Bible, and unless there's a local variant (e.g. Mary, Marie, Maria, Mair...), the names get pronounced differently in different languages.
Eli is said as 'Ellie' in Welsh, Spanish etc

SowhoamI505 · 19/08/2024 14:56

Love it. a nice middle name is Alexandra or something of that length.

MelodyMalone · 19/08/2024 14:57

Sethera · 17/08/2024 20:55

Sanger (not necessarily a bad thing, Patrick liked the look of her).

That's always who I think of, too!

Lampzade · 19/08/2024 14:58

Great name
