Lois?

What are your thoughts?

I like strong feminine names, classic, old-fashioned, and not too trendy.

I don't know anyone called Lois in real life but like the association with Lane and noted an Olympian athlete with the same name.

Concerned about risk of frequent mispronunciation. We're not Welsh.

Love it!

But it's a popular name in Wales but not so much elsewhere in the UK. OP said she's not Welsh but doesn't say they are not in Wales.

Don't live in Wales either, and I don't like their pronunciation 😭

I like the low-iss pronounciation a lot, where I live it’s l-oice which I don’t like, but I’ve only heard that pronunciation in wales

Waitingfordoggo · 19/08/2024 20:28

It’s a lovely name. Pretty but unfussy. I know two girls called Lois, both teenagers.

HauntedbyMagpies · 19/08/2024 20:47

Beautiful name

Concerned about risk of frequent mispronunciation. @theduchessofspork .

You what? She’s said she’s not in wales and she doesn’t like the Welsh pronunciation, which she doesn’t need to worry about because she’s not in flipping wales. Give it up woman.

In fairness, I am neither Welsh nor do I live in Wales - but I would pronounce Lois the Welsh way.

KittyEmK · 20/08/2024 09:08

Lovely and strong - sounding.

peskywaffle · 23/08/2024 06:59

I have a 10-week-old baby called Lois so all this love for the name is music to my ears! I went for it for the same reasons as OP. We pronounce it Low-iss. I do live in Wales, but an English speaking part, and so far only one person has pronounced it Loyce. However, I'm surprised by how many people have pronounced her name "Lewis" or spelled it "Louis" in messages, though that could be predictive text. I also read an article about someone whose daughter is called Lois who is constantly correcting people's pronunciation, which surprises me as it seems such a simple name to pronounce! So I do think you'll have to be quite thick skinned about it if you do go for it and not mind correcting people.

DacwMamYnDwad · 23/08/2024 09:23

@peskywaffle , I think you'd get those issues with many names. (Louis might get Lewis, Louise, Louie etc).
Congratulations, and a big welcome for little Lois. Lovely name.

disorganisedbadchaos · 23/08/2024 09:27

I love it. It’s like a much nicer and softer sounding twist on Louise for me.

iheartrocknroll · 23/08/2024 09:32

I'm going against the grain here. I don't like it. I think it's quite a harsh, ugly sounding name and reminds me of a much older person rather than a baby. It's strong but not pretty, reminds me of Ruth in that sense. Sorry, only my opinion.

DacwMamYnDwad · 23/08/2024 09:37

@disorganisedbadchaos , it isn't a twist on Louise. It's a different name and is from the Bible.

peskywaffle · 23/08/2024 14:55

Good point!

edit: meant to post this as a reply, not a general post. Have done so now but can't seem to delete this. New to Mumsnet 🤦‍♀️

Good point! Makes me feel more relaxed about the mispronunciation of Lois ☺️

Snooks1971 · 23/08/2024 14:57

My 102 yr old grandmother’s name, she passed a couple of years ago now. It is DD’s middle name now!

Great underused but classic name.

Philandbill · 23/08/2024 14:58

Beautiful name. I wanted it for DD 2 but DH used his veto on the superman's girlfriend grounds sadly.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/08/2024 15:33

When dd left primary school 2 years ago, there was a Lois in every year group! I don't know what happened here 12 or so years ago, but I've never come across one before or since. I believe that they are all pronounced "Low Is".

Love it! Classic, not easy to misspell/mispronounce, unlikely to have other girls in her class with the same name. I’ve only known two—one is 11 and the other is 24. It’s a beautiful name.

Thanks. You are right on both counts. I would hope once the pronunciation was clarified people would remember say her name correctly.

This is helpful to know, thanks. Congrats on your LO x

Name changed for this, but I love the name. It's the name I chose for DD.

Over 35 years ago I went on holiday and met a girl called Lois, I thought it was a beautiful name, and it was long before I had heard of Lois Lane. I swore if I ever had a daughter that would be her name.

We also pronounce Low-iss. She also gets called Lewis and spelt Louis 😁

She's 27 now, there aren't that many about. What I did notice over the years is that it is quite an old fashioned name in the US, probably similar to the name Barbara here, but since we live in England I never cared.
