Ive been liking this name lately. I like gemstone names.

Not my cup of tea. Harsh sound and I can’t get past the synonym - it’s still used in historical dramas to mean “whore”.

Amber has a similar style but a softer sound and less obvious negatives imo. Or you could be really brave and go for Emerald? (bit associated with the actor/director Fennel at the moment but at least has the option of more commonplace nn Em/Emmie if she wanted it)

CruCru · 19/08/2024 09:08

I don’t like Jade - mainly because it doesn’t sound nice in the accent where I’m from (think JAAAY-de). I associate it with the Chantelle / Chardonnay / Chenice type names.

I went to school with a Jade. She'll be early 40s now. It's definitely a nicer name than Pearl or Opal and less over-used than Ruby but personally I would only use it as a middle name.

How about Sapphire or Ebony?

VenusClapTrap · 19/08/2024 11:30

Love it. Also love Amber, Pearl, Emerald and Sapphire.

SparklyJadeFawn · 21/08/2024 22:03

Ooh Sapphire is nice

I love the name Jade because I love the colour green

Summerperfume · 21/08/2024 22:17

Genuinely curious for all those saying it’s dated but when a name such as Edith or Edward is mentioned MN fall over themselves to love it and there is never any mention of them being dated. What’s the difference?

jade is a very popular name in France. If it’s good enough for the French it’s good enough! I think it’s a lovely name!!!

SparklyJadeFawn · 21/08/2024 22:18

I met the cutest baby Jade. I used to babysit her

We called her "baby jade" not just jade.

It was such a sweet name on her

Gummybear23 · 21/08/2024 22:20

Reminds me of the late Jade Goody.
Quite a dated name.

Janedoe82 · 21/08/2024 22:22

Immediately thought of Jade Goody. Who I quite liked but not sure it is very 2024

Quite a dated name.

Why does it remind people of jade goody though. She was just one person. There are plenty of jade's out there

I think there’s a difference between dated and old fashioned/ traditional. I guess it’s the name equivalent of the difference between vintage and antique. One has passed thd test of time, the other just isn’t new.

Personally I like Edith and Edward but find Jade a bit passé. I also agree the mean girl comments ( applies to the ones I knew).

Name another one we'd have heard of.

Jade Thirlwall.

She was in Little Mix, the band

SparklyJadeFawn · 21/08/2024 22:41

Jade Ewen - Sugababes

Calliopespa · 21/08/2024 22:41

Jade Goody ( born 80’s I think)

SparklyJadeFawn · 21/08/2024 22:42

Jade Carey - USA Olympic gold gymnastic medallist is probably the most current famous Jade.

There aren't a lot of them about. But I don't know why Jade goody would be the most remembered one.

There are many more recent and more famous jades than her

Berlinlover · 21/08/2024 22:42

Jade was very chavy here in Ireland 25 years ago.

Chavy? Do you mean that poor people used the name?

So what? They can use any name they want

PurpleChrayn · 21/08/2024 22:43

I love it.

My DD has a classmate called Jade at nursery.

SparklyJadeFawn · 21/08/2024 22:46

I love all the gemstone names.

And you can buy the girls great presents.

I have a little cousin called Ruby. And we all get her different Ruby bracelets and rings at different times.

And she absolutely loves them.

Or we even just get her things like red coloured key rings to go with her "ruby theme"

So many gift ideas

EconomyClassRockstar · 21/08/2024 22:48

The only Jade I have ever met was a guy and I really loved his name.

SparklyJadeFawn · 21/08/2024 22:49

Yeah jade and jaden are nice on boys.

Jada is also another nice version for girls
