I don't like it but that's because it was so popular in the 90s and every one I knew was horrid sorry!

Think of the name not the person

The name has nothing to do with the person that you knew.

It would be like me saying "I hate the name Sarah because I once knew a horrible sarah"

It doesn't really make sense.

Janedoe82 · 21/08/2024 22:58

Of course lots of other famous Jades but Jade Goody stands out the most for me anyway.

SnapBang · 21/08/2024 22:59

Reminds me of Jade Jagger - like it a lot

I mean, I 100% would never call my DD Sarah for that exact reason! I think that's fairly normal.

I can't think of any name that I don't like because I one met someone that I hated, who had the name.

But sure if that's how it is for you, okay.

Jagger was a cool surname

To me it feels dated, and a bit of a mean girl / school bully name.

This. There was a school bully named Jade when I was at school too!

That said I don't like Pearl or Opal either. They sound very old.

Emerald if you like green? Em names are popular at the moment. NN Em or Emmie.

What do you think about the name Jade?

I wouldn't, given that it can - unfortunately - also mean a woman of ill repute. (Old fashioned, I know, but it only needs one kid at school to stumble across it and then your daughter's life will be made a misery.)

Who here has ever used the word jade to describe a woman of ill repute though.

I've never heard it ever being said to describe a woman like that.

No one says that.

Maybe it once was centuries ago. But it's definitely not used in the English language now to describe a woman of ill repute

disorganisedbadchaos · 21/08/2024 23:18

I like it. I really like stone/gem names… Amber, Ruby, Pearl, Opal

DuchessOfSausage · 21/08/2024 23:20

@SparklyJadeFawn , we use it as a 'bitch' type of term. Probably regional.

Fair enough. I'm possibly more aware of it because I used to teach English.

Shakespeare used it. I wonder whether you're anywhere near Stratford?

Edited to add, personally I much prefer Jade to both Opal and Pearl, which both still feel very old lady to me despite them both being back in fashion. Probably because I don't yet know any little ones myself. I don't know anyone called Opal and the only Pearls I know are in their 80s!

I know a four year old Pearl :)

Oh I know they're out there, according to the stats, but I'm saying that I personally don't know any so it still feels like an old lady name to me.

It's the same with most vintage names. When you hear they're back in fashion you really struggle to picture them on a child at first as you only know old ladies or men with the name. Then you meet a baby with that name and it suddenly becomes totally normal to you to hear that name on a child.

I felt exactly the same about Authur, Iris, Ivy, Stanley etc but now I love those names for babies as I'm use go hearing them on little ones. Personally, when I hear Pearl my only reference at the moment is someone rocking a blue rinse!

That's how it is for most people because the name has negative feelings associated. If feelings on a name didn't matter nobody would ask others opinions. Also weirdly I've never met a nice Sarah either

LochKatrine · 22/08/2024 12:57

As others have said, Jade is dated.
Pearl and Opal are more modern, they've come round again, so I think they seem younger and fresher.
If you like gemstone names, Amber and Emerald are nice. I once taught a girl called Sapphire.

Walkthelakes · 22/08/2024 12:59

I’ve often thought what a lovely name Jade is and how in some ways it fits the nature vibe at the moment. I think the reason it isn’t popular is that its height feels quite recent so it feels a bit dated. Also think this applies to Dawn which is a gorgeous name but feels very tied to a quite recent era

Pemba · 22/08/2024 13:03

Sorry but I find it a tacky kind of name, it's not classy at all.

Always sounds like someone is trying to say 'Jane' with a bad cold to me. (Now Jane, there's a real classic name).

Plus the historical meaning of a woman with a very dodgy reputation of course.

Ruby or Amber maybe would be much nicer.

sectionscarhelp · 22/08/2024 13:11

I like jade. Does it matter what's in and what's isn't? I personally didn't want my children to have the same name as loads of other kids

LochKatrine · 22/08/2024 13:13

I think that's true. If you like a name, use it. I teach a 12 year old Phyllis and I've really come to like the name!

An association will make someone like or dislike a name.
That's how many new names become fashionable or stop being used.

Very dated now. I know several in their 30's.

I know one who's 30 odd. She's an absolutely horrible person. Unfortunately, the person can put you off a name.
