I think it could be a lovely name ( named after the star and the Latin meaning female warrior) and could be called Belle for short )

I think it's fab, but definitely a bold choice!

HotCrossBunplease · 29/07/2024 13:33

Maleficent has a nice ring to it.

Marblessolveeverything · 29/07/2024 13:29

It's also a brand of contraceptive.....so nope

I very much doubt that majority of people would know that, hardly a major consideration. Its not like she is suggesting calling a son Durex.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 29/07/2024 13:45

Minerva is beautiful and being a family name is lovely. She’ll get called Minnie/Min.

Viola is also pretty.

Violet, Miranda, Phoebe, Persephone, Diana and Helena all have a similar “feel” (old, posh, a nod to classical literature/myth and/or a moon of some planet or other).

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 29/07/2024 13:48

If you like the Belle shortening but want a longer name - Belinda is under used.

Eh it's one of the most popular one here and comes up on Google me pretty top reckon the kids would have a good go..

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 29/07/2024 14:04

I knew an Artemis. What a fabulous name! Viola is lovely. I also like Ariadne and Miranda. But please, not Bellatrix.

Colinthecaterpillarstrikesagain · 29/07/2024 14:05

It sounds like the name of a band.

shoopshoopdedoo · 29/07/2024 15:19

Beatrix?

MumChp · 29/07/2024 15:22

Beatrix is nice. I like it better than Bellatrix.

Joolsin · 29/07/2024 15:23

I love Bellatrix, but sadly it's too associated with HP to use. I love the name Lilith, if you're thinking dark, gothic names. Viola and Minerva are both good too.

HoppingPavlova · 29/07/2024 15:26

I’ve seen god knows how many people get cats and name them Bellatrix post Harry Potter - and the conversation invariable goes ‘…… because I’m a huge HP fan’, so people will just make that assumption with a child and she will no doubt get a ribbing in the playground once they reach the age of watching HP (I think mine were younger primary when they watched).

wickerlady · 29/07/2024 15:44

Haha, no!

SanMarzano · 29/07/2024 15:48

Bellatrix is too HP but I think Minerva is fine especially after a relative. What about:
Miranda
Calliope
Thalia
Rosalind
Francesca
Christina
Persephone

QueenOfWeeds · 29/07/2024 16:59

@Pocketfullofdogtreats I was also going to say I know a baby Artemis and I think it’s a lovely name. DH veto-ed most of my classical names for DD, and probably rightly so.

OP, there was a thread about posh girls’ names for the OP’s chickens and there were some lovely classical names on there - worth a look.

Sundaysunshine21 · 29/07/2024 17:56

I think Bellatrix would be a bit cruel as most people (me included) would have only ever heard it in HP.

Minerva would be fine as I don’t think it’s so associated with HP.

Others you may like:

Beatrix (personally I prefer Beatrice)
Octavia (I heard Ottavia the other day which I thought was nice)
Isolde
Penelope
Aurora

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/07/2024 18:06

Bagatrix?

Quitelikeacatslife · 29/07/2024 18:07

Bellatrix is ruined for now, sorry . Minerva also HP name but not as obvious ie usually called professor mcgonagall and was a positive character at least . Will get Minnie or Min, which is quite cute when little .

whichfan · 29/07/2024 12:11

there’s something very S&M / Domanstrix about bellatrix

You nailed it!!

It's not a good name.

BananaLamah · 29/07/2024 18:34

It’s too Harry Potter, sorry.

I wanted to call my DD Fenchurch but DH wouldn’t let me. Said it was too well known because of the book. Blooming authors spoiling all of the nice names!

JessyCarr · 29/07/2024 18:43

Former Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie has a Bellatrix. Not my style at all though.

Topseyt123 · 29/07/2024 22:12

Just no!

Very Harry Potter.

WhatNext24 · 29/07/2024 22:16

But... she killed Sirius Black.

Don't do it OP.

readingmakesmehappy · 30/07/2024 08:14

How about Artemis? Or Cassandra? You seem to like classical names.
