I think it could be a lovely name ( named after the star and the Latin meaning female warrior) and could be called Belle for short )

Viola is a lovely name.

Uricon2 · 29/07/2024 12:34

Why not go the whole hog and make it Cruella?

Minerva OK, Viola fine. Beatrix fine. Belle fine.

Not Bellatrix.

ab03 · 29/07/2024 12:36

Beatrix is similar but imo prettier and without the negative connotations! I also love Viola, and can see the appeal of Minerva (Minnie is a cute nickname!)

Sounds like Greek and roman mythology and maybe also Shakespearean names might be worth researching for more options

willWillSmithsmith · 29/07/2024 12:38

I thought of Bellatrix for my dog. It’s too tied in with Harry Potter (even though lots of names in there are ok), it’s too unusual, it would be like naming your son Hagrid.

Just to add, if it hadn’t been for HP I would love the name Bellatrix, but for me it’s a no.

wildthingsinthenight · 29/07/2024 12:41

Beatrix?

whichfan · 29/07/2024 12:11

there’s something very S&M / Domanstrix about bellatrix

Ha I agree.

MrsSlocombesCat · 29/07/2024 12:42

I can't imagine shouting any of these names up the stairs or outside to get my child's attention. I quite like the name Vera, still relatively uncommon and definitely an old-fashioned name.

CharlotteLightandDark · 29/07/2024 12:42

My friend has a Bellatrix, they call her Bee.

tbh I dislike the name Bella, even though it’s my nieces name. Bee is better imo.

rainbowbee · 29/07/2024 12:44

Call her Isobel with nn Bella.
Bellatrix is Helena Bonham Carter shouting and posturing with a wand and gown, like a Halloween costume.

whichfan · 29/07/2024 12:03

and i reckon you’re called something like… Emma

Or Hemione.

@Mums73 Just don't. DON'T call your child Bellatrix FFS! Hmm

BESTAUNTB · 29/07/2024 12:45

I’ve never read/watched Harry Potter so my first thought was S&M.

Never heard of Minerva but it’s really nice, especially with the family link.

Another fan of Viola here - lovely name 🥰

Jennyathemall · 29/07/2024 12:49

How about Severus?
Or Voldemort?

Lastminuteisinit · 29/07/2024 12:49

Just to say was reading about the new massive HBO series, filming 2025 then released over ten years… I love a lot of HP names but kids born now could honestly be watching it until teens in the new series let alone books and movies.

SossijRoll · 29/07/2024 12:49

She’ll spend her life being asked if her parents are HP fans.

A bit like parents who name their kids after Star Wars or Twilight characters.

Association with a very strong woman, too.

It's a good name for a cat treat.

KreedKafer · 29/07/2024 13:11

and could be called Belle for short

If you like the name Belle, name her that.

gentlemum · 29/07/2024 13:16

Even if you're not thinking of Harry Potter or naming her after that, that's all anyone else will be able to think of and you/she will have a lifetime of being asked if she's named after Bellatrix in HP. I would say if you like Belle go for that as it's a lovely name. Or Viola you mentioned would be ok.

TheCadoganArms · 29/07/2024 12:07

Get Professor Gilderoy Lockhart to perform a global memory charm and then you can use the name without any Harry Potter association.

😂

OlympicsFanGirl · 29/07/2024 13:22

People will assume your are a mega HP fan

What about Bellatrice or Beatrice instead?

still a bit frilly for me but less HP

PyongyangKipperbang · 29/07/2024 13:28

I think you could get away with Minerva, maybe Minnie for short. But not Bellatrix, sadly.

I like Viola too.

DelphiniumBlue · 29/07/2024 13:29

Calling your child Bellatrix is like calling her Cruella or even Suella!
Don't do it!

SonicTheHodgeheg · 29/07/2024 12:06

Minerva is also a Harry Potter name - I would find a site with a list of characters because it sounds like you could fond some inspiration there. At least Minerva is a good person this time

It's also a brand of contraceptive.....so nope
