Boy name list - what do you think?

We've got a long shortlist, sort of. I'm hoping one of these really grows on me because we can't seem to find any we both love and can use! DS will take both our surnames and one is quite long, so we're after a shortish name. Avoiding V names, B names for alliterative madness, and anything ending in 'orin.' Also a bit wary of anything too surname-sounding because he'll have enough of those!

Iven
Iver
Levin (Lev)
Linus
Lowen
Rohmer
Liev (Lee-ev, like Liev Schreiber)
Asa
Innes / Ennis
Ellis
Keir (probs not though thanks to Starmer🙄)
Rowe
Eugene (Gene)
Aneurin (exception to the 'rin' rule)
Orson
Silas
Lincoln (love Linc as a nn)
Irvin
Oren (Ren)
Ernest

What do you think? Middle name James or August (for my late dad) possibly, if either fits.

V names we like but can't use: Virgil, Vaughan. Otto is okay, but can't use it or Otis either. Ditto 'Eli' or 'Elias.' We're surrounded by boys, so it rules out a LOT. Even if we wanted a more traditional name! 😩

Lowen behold !

… and then at Christmas “the cattle are Lowen…the baby awakes.” 🎹🎶

Throwwaway · 18/07/2024 22:39

Eugene and Ernest are the only typically ‘normal’ ones in my opinion that won’t get too many ‘how do you spell that what does it mean where is that from etc)
the rest aren’t my style personally but either way think of the kind of future it’ll give the kid. I have a very strange name and I was always mad at my mum for it 😂

Really don't like any of the names.

Earnest fits with the 'old man name' fashion over recent years (Reggie, Arthur, Stanley, Alfred). I met a baby Ernie recently and it did make me smile, if I'm honest.

Does Ernie make anyone else think this?

The only ones I like are

Asa
Ellis
Keir

... Makes me think "and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west." (Was it Benny Hill?).

User6761 · 18/07/2024 23:22

I like Innes, Elis and Keir.

Many on your list (including Innes) have the surname vibe to me that you said you didn't want.

MirandaBlu · 18/07/2024 23:22

Out of your list, with adjacent names, I like:

Elijah
Ellis (maybe too surname?)
Innes
Ivor
Linus
Silas

I'd also possibly suggest:

August
Mads
Matias/Mattias/Mathias/Matthias
Nathaniel
Oisin
Rasmus
Thaddeus
Tobias

ReadtheReviews · 18/07/2024 23:28

Devlin
Lex

Out of yours I love Lincoln and Orson

Tobias

Rasmus, Thaddeus and Tobias I really like! Working with Rasmus, if op likes Eugene would Erasmus be an option? It’s slightly less nerdy,

Linus has had positive comments on here but I have to say it makes me think of both lino(leum)and Sinus. Silas does too a bit (as well as silage.)

Kier and James are excellent
Ellis is alright

The rest are awful sorry

Smittenkitchen · 18/07/2024 23:40

I like Lincoln. Unusual, strong, nice sound to it. Lovely city

I like all those names. Think we have similar taste. Agree with other poster that Ivan is nicer than Iven.
Keiran or kerr instead of Keir?
How about Sylvan?
Magnus?

NoSnowdrop · 18/07/2024 23:43

Innes is the only one I like. Or Gene. But not Eugene.

What about Levi?
Or Ray?

Would you consider Ivo?

DTisawazzock · 19/07/2024 00:30

What kind of name is Asa? How would you pronounce that?

Luminousalumnus · 19/07/2024 00:35

Asa or Silas would be great. Not really struck on any of the others.

DTisawazzock · 19/07/2024 00:30

What kind of name is Asa? How would you pronounce that?

Pronounced as “Acer” - like the tree. It’s Biblical, like similar but more popular Ezra. There’s been a few famous Asa’s too (depending on which generation you are) - for this generation there’s Actor Butterfield (Sex Education, Hugo etc) , for the older generation there was footballer Hartford or Historian/Author Briggs. Super cool name, just a shame there might be a few who mispronounce it as “Asser”.

deliwoman1 · 19/07/2024 08:52

Thanks everyone!

Now DP is on about how he likes Virgil best again 😩 DD’s name is Vada so …

This is so hard! It was easy with DD and now the name fits her so well. People do ask about it but generally remember ‘My Girl’ and/or love Star Wars 😂 so we get positive responses! Her nursery room manager loves it and is so thankful she’s got an uncommon name. Makes life easier for her, but bloody harder for us to choose for DS!

My favourites are Levin (I think of the character in Anna Karenina), Ellis and Ernest.
