Girls Name with Diminutive

I'm due with daughter number 2 soon and trying to find names that DH and I like, he is more relaxed about names than I am and pretty open to suggestions. I tend to like names that can be shortened to something with ie/y at the end such as Harriet to Hattie but not so much names with an L sound in the middle.

Here are some I like but either can't use it, DH isn't so keen on, I don't like either the long or shortened form, they don't have a common longer/shorter form or they're just not quite right.

Saffron/Saffy
Edith/Edie
Olive/Livvie
Isabella/Izzy
Roberta/Bobbie
Bridie
Heidi
Katie
Fern
Erin
Daisy

I came across Heather the other day and thought a diminutive might be Hettie but not sure if that's a usual shortening of it? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I know you said you don’t like L sounds in the middle but what about Philippa shortened to Pippa?

IggyAce · 02/06/2024 19:05

I know a heather who went by Hettie. My dd is Imogen and she was Immie as a toddler, idgy in upper junior and now nearly an adult is Midge, Iggy works as a nn for Imogen too.
Charlotte/Charlie or Lottie
Elizabeth has lots not nn potential

MillsAndBalloons · 02/06/2024 19:05

Francesca - frankie
Georgiana - georgie

NoNeedforALlama · 02/06/2024 19:19

Won't quite everyone but thanks all,

Phillipa/Pippa is nice and I think it was one of my suggestions for DD which DH didn't like so will have to see if he's changed his mind

I also had Imogen on my list but DH doesn't like Immy unfortunately. One of my oldest friends is a Charlotte and I do love it but think it might be a bit odd. DDs middle name is Elizabeth which I am regretting because it has SO much potential!

Georgie is ok, not keen on Georgia/Georgina/Georgiana though. And DH has a childhood friend called Franky so that might also be strange.

I forgot I also love Emmeline but DHs ex was Emily so he vetoed that as well!

Sorry I know I'm difficult to please!

Maddie from Madeline

Elizabeth being a middle name for your other daughter wouldn't put me off to be honest! Use it anyway 👌🏼

Call her Diminutive.

NNs could be Dimmy, Mini, Mimi, Ivy, Newt if you feel a little outlandish.

NoNeedforALlama · 02/06/2024 20:31

Thanks all, definitely some to add to the list!

Heather doesn't really have a traditional short form, but I can definitely see Hetty working.

Dorothea has a lot of diminutives - not quite as many as Elizabeth but quite a few - Dot, Dotty, Dolly, Dorry, Thea...

And Alexandra has loads - of which Allie or Lexie might be to your taste.
