Girls Name with Diminutive

I'm due with daughter number 2 soon and trying to find names that DH and I like, he is more relaxed about names than I am and pretty open to suggestions. I tend to like names that can be shortened to something with ie/y at the end such as Harriet to Hattie but not so much names with an L sound in the middle.

Here are some I like but either can't use it, DH isn't so keen on, I don't like either the long or shortened form, they don't have a common longer/shorter form or they're just not quite right.

Saffron/Saffy
Edith/Edie
Olive/Livvie
Isabella/Izzy
Roberta/Bobbie
Bridie
Heidi
Katie
Fern
Erin
Daisy

I came across Heather the other day and thought a diminutive might be Hettie but not sure if that's a usual shortening of it? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I love loads of the shorter names that have been suggested but not the longer versions as much. Maybe we should just go for a shorter version as the full name but I like the idea of them having options as they get older.

Elizabeth being a middle name for your other daughter wouldn't put me off to be honest! Use it anyway 👌🏼

I would use it too. We have a friend called Elizabeth and I call her Betty for short.

CheeseWisely · 03/06/2024 19:10

I've also known a Heather with Hetty as a diminutive, and know a Harriet that's a Hattie.

Salma / Sally / Sal

I've got it OP,
Felicity nn Lissy, Fliss

NoNeedforALlama · 03/06/2024 20:22

I ran Heather by DH but he doesn't like it unfortunately, for someone who says they don't mind he seems to dislike a lot of the names I love 🙄

I've got it OP,
Felicity nn Lissy, Fliss

I swing between loving Felicity and then finding it too frilly sounding, think it's the L sound in it, don't know why but names with L just sound too soft to me?

You can use Elizabeth as the first name. I know people who have used a middle name for child number 2 , then used the same name as a first name for child number 3.

Seashor · 09/06/2024 16:01

Antonia Annie or Toni would have been my daughters name.

Won't quite everyone but thanks all,

Phillipa/Pippa is nice and I think it was one of my suggestions for DD which DH didn't like so will have to see if he's changed his mind

I also had Imogen on my list but DH doesn't like Immy unfortunately. One of my oldest friends is a Charlotte and I do love it but think it might be a bit odd. DDs middle name is Elizabeth which I am regretting because it has SO much potential!

Georgie is ok, not keen on Georgia/Georgina/Georgiana though. And DH has a childhood friend called Franky so that might also be strange.

I forgot I also love Emmeline but DHs ex was Emily so he vetoed that as well!

Sorry I know I'm difficult to please!

Emmeline would be Emmy
Not Emily

I wouldn't discount names which don't have an obvious nn. NNs naturally evolve, even with short names you wouldn't imagine having a nn. So, I would say, first of all make a shortlist of the 'official' names you both like.

peachybee · 10/06/2024 01:52

Camilla/Millie was a name I loved but couldn't get my partner on board with.

However, we named her Aurelia and told everyone that Rae would be her nickname and I hate people using the nickname!!!
I loved the idea of it, my little 'Rae' of sunshine but just hate hearing her called that and feel I can't be outwardly annoyed cause it was my idea 😂

So I would say pick a name you 100% love on its own and nicknames will evolve naturally

Thanks for all the new responses, will run some of these by DH. I'm still stuck on Heather/Hettie but he is adamant it's a no so I'll have to move on from that one, I think Harriet/Hattie might be the closest to that (I'm not keen on Henrietta as we had a chicken with that name 😆) but I'm not sold on it yet
