Hi all,

I have under three weeks left until baby boy arrives and I am still feeling so indecisive about his name! Both my partner and myself have found boys names SUPER hard to choose! We have one DD named Evelyn but is usually called by her nn Evie.

So far our list consists of Oliver and Jude. Surname is 2 syllables and begins with D. Potentially Oliver Robin or Jude Peter? Not sure that Jude Robin flows well?

What do you prefer or do you have any other ideas regarding names that we may like? Not concerned regarding popularity.

Some other names we like but cannot use:

Henry
Harry
Thomas

Thanks in advance!

I really like Oliver but not a fan of Jude at all.
Benjamin Robin aka Evie & Ben
William Peter aka Evie & Will
Matthew Robin aka Evie & Matt
Daniel Peter aka Evie & Dan

Please not Christopher Robin unless you're a winnie the pooh fan!!

WildCherryBlossom · 22/05/2024 13:49

Would you consider Robin as a first name?

Evelyn to me has a 1920's / 1930's vibe (I'm a big Evelyn Waugh fan - his first wife was also called Evelyn) so perhaps a name like Hugh, Cecil, Cyril, Walter, Wilfred, Eugene, Lawrence, Edwin, Maurice, Philip

Strong classic names like the royal names goo well with Evelyn - so things like Louis, George, William, James. Or older generation (but now more popular) names like Sidney, Stanley, etc

Robin was a first name contender for a long while actually. However, made the mistake of telling a few family members our shortlist. My partner and I are naturally redheads and a few made comments that if baby has our colourings it might be an unfortunate name whilst they are at school etc. I know it sounds silly but I just felt the seed of negativity in respect of that name was planted when they said that. But I do really love the name so would still happily use it as a middle name. I may have to have a little look at 1920’s/ 1930’s names to see if I have missed anything!

Rafe Oliver

@Grennwyld Thanks. I do like Louis but wonder if there would be mispronunciation issues with this name. George, William and James are all lovely traditional names, but I just don’t feel like any of them are the one. Two of my ex-partners were called George and William so that may play into why I’m not particularly keen on those names.

@Moreteaandchocolate Thanks. Do you think Evelyn and Oliver sounds like a mouthful? I feel like Evie and Ollie sounds quite sweet. I really like Jack too but DP not a fan.

Evie and Ollie sound gorgeous! The longer names sound nice together too - they would be trickier to shout quickly together across a busy park but I guess they’d be Evie and Ollie day to day so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Oliver's #4 in the 2022 ONS list, so I'd rule it out on the basis that it's too popular.
Not a fan of Jude, or Robin - partly because they're unisex.
Nor of Peter - not a 'strong' name, nn worse.

I'd go for something like Horatio, Cosmo or Inigo, with John or James as middle.
