Hi all,

I have under three weeks left until baby boy arrives and I am still feeling so indecisive about his name! Both my partner and myself have found boys names SUPER hard to choose! We have one DD named Evelyn but is usually called by her nn Evie.

So far our list consists of Oliver and Jude. Surname is 2 syllables and begins with D. Potentially Oliver Robin or Jude Peter? Not sure that Jude Robin flows well?

What do you prefer or do you have any other ideas regarding names that we may like? Not concerned regarding popularity.

Some other names we like but cannot use:

Henry
Harry
Thomas

Thanks in advance!

Love the name Evelyn so beautiful and elegant name always reminds me of the character from the mummy. I think Wilfred would go well or Albert Im thinking something old and traditional would work Oliver does sound good too

Inspired by another thread

Robin/Rowan/Ronan

Evelyn and Oliver are a nice combo. I disagree with a pp that the popularity of Oliver should put you off - the Evelyn/Evie/Eva names would be just as popular if we combined them, but it still doesn’t stop them being gorgeous choices.

Jude - I dislike the sound and connotations and find it too “now” (it was hardly used as a given name apart from the famous Hardy novel till Jude Law became famous).

Robin - gorgeous as a traditional nn for Robert but as a given name I feel somehow it’s a bit lacking if Evelyn has a fuller name. Evie and Robin (Evelyn and Robert) just somehow fit better to me.

If you like classic Thomas and Henry, then maybe Edward , Samuel , Daniel, David, Joseph or Alexander? Or Arthur, Wilfred, Alfred or Frederick which have had similar style historical popularity rises to Evelyn?

Go for Frederick . .
We loved a V V popular girls name ..may have been no 1 at that time.
We worried about going for it.
We did and she was only one in primary school year .
No others at any clubs she does or did .
Yes a few in her secondary school year .
We haven't regretted it

To be honest I think you've cracked it yourself, Oliver and Jude are both lovely strong names for a boy and go beautifully with Evelyn, whichever you chose will be perfect. You don't need our help 🩷

Jude Peter is very handsome.

Oliver is ok but he'll probably end up Ollie and Evie and Ollie feel a bit samey together. Evie and Jude are a much better combination imo.

My grandmother's sister was called Evelyn, known as Evie. Their brothers were Francis and John. Therefore those names sit right with me. (1910-1916).

Workingtoohardmummy · 02/11/2024 08:20

the two Evies I know have brothers called Lawrence (Lawrie) and Alfred (Alfie)

StormingNorman · 02/11/2024 08:40

Isabel and Felix
Isabel and Xavier
Isabel and Aubrey
Isabel and Christopher (Kit)

I'm not a massive fan of Oliver but it goes very well with Evelyn actually. Better than Jude I think.

Otherwise I do love Robin as a boy's name, not sure why baby potentially being redheaded would matter? Is it because of the old school books Robin Redhead? I don't think those are widely used at all anymore.

But if Oliver feels right to you I wouldn't overthink it.

BootballJoy · 02/11/2024 12:31

Sorry just seen it's an old thread! Hope baby is doing well whatever you decided to call him!

FriendlyChattyBee · 02/11/2024 12:36

Both Oliver and Jude sound lovely, Personally I think Oliver Robin works very well and goes well with Evelyn. I also loved Jude it is a bit more unique but still classic. Maybe you want Arthur, Leo, Samuel or more?

Evelyn pairs well with them and, in fact, they have a similar timeless feel to one another. Wishing you the best deciding and welcome to your soon to be arrival

Thanks all for your advice with helping me decide! He ended up being nameless for about two weeks but we decided to go for Jude William in the end.

I honestly found boys names so much harder to pick compared to girls names. He is now just over five months old, is the most gorgeous little boy, and I can’t imagine him being called anything else!
