Hi all.

We would like to hear some suggestions of French names any for our DD Inès’ little brother or sister. If it helps, we like classic names and not so much modern ones. We also prefer ones that aren’t too long but open to longer suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

Inés is Spanish - wouldn't a Spanish name go better with it?

Hi. Thanks for your comment. It’s actually used in Portugal and France too and some other places. The accent will change accordingly. We have an Inès as she is French.

I love Amandine. Apolline also lovely. Agnes is beautiful in French but perhaps too similar to Ines. Lena or Celine perhaps.

Boys - a lot of Naëls around. Loris is nice. Yanis. Hard not to love Valentin. I still like Maxime. And Timothée

@Mila82 I think I'm starting to get a sense of what you like. I think you like names which aren't too long, are recognisably French rather than international, and fairly current in France at the moment.

The trouble is that a lot of names which are popular in France right now are international sounding names which don't have that specifically French vibe.

In addition to Adèle I would suggest Jeanne, Manon and Albane for a girl, which are all French sounding names in the current top 100. You could also consider Suzanne, which I think is a bit granny chic in France but coming back into fashion. (I know 5 year old and 2 year old sisters called Adèle and Suzanne.) Apolline is nice and quite popular in France bit might be a bit out there for you.

For boys I'd suggest Hugo or Léon.

How about Victor or Clovis? Or Jean?

KirstenBlest · 30/03/2024 12:28

What sort of qualities do you think comes to mind with Inès, out of interest?
Recognisably French, works internationally, sounds pretty much the same in English and French, pretty but not twee, stylish, shortish and unfussy.

Names like Aurelie, Amelie, Elodie, Ottilie are mainstream and a bit fussy IMO.
Sebastien, Hugo, Theo etc have the different pronunciations and are mainstream.

Same as I don't associate Carmen as a male name...but try telling Carmy "the bear" that!! Wink

I've just remembered but last night I thought of Renée.
