Hi all.

We would like to hear some suggestions of French names any for our DD Inès’ little brother or sister. If it helps, we like classic names and not so much modern ones. We also prefer ones that aren’t too long but open to longer suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

How about Mathilde?

I wish but we have two in the family and not someone like a mum who we could name a girl after! Thank you.

For boys how about Hugo? Maxime?
Hugo sounds different in the two languages. Maxime is great but looks feminine to UK eyes.

Hugo makes me think of Victor, which I like a lot.

Both great names. I love Max.

Yes, I always ask parents in our area (lots of French) if they’re a Hugh-go or a Ugo.

I know what you mean about Maxime. It’s one letter away from Maxine of course.

I also like Marion but I’m not sure it ‘goes’ with Inès.

I also live in quite a french area ! Maybe we are neighbours! Another possibility is Constance? Or Charles (I like both the English and French pronunciation!)

Or Flora?

Maxime is lovely. Marion sounds like Marryun in the UK. Morgane is pretty.

Yes, I’m not convinced many will be able to nail the French pronunciation like Marion Cottilard. Haven’t come across a Morgane in a long time!

I only know one, she's in her 20s.

I suspect a lot of the suggestions on here might not be current baby names, and you really need something with the same qualities as Inès.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 29/03/2024 21:53

What about Adèle?

Edited

I remember a thread a while ago for French baby names and some suggested things like Henriette. I assumed they were British as non-French speakers will not necessarily know that while Henrietta is beautiful and old fashioned but nice old fashioned in the UK, Henriette is not the equivalence in France in this respect. It’s funny how just a difference in one final letter still has a huge difference in reception in different languages.

That’s an interesting point. Maybe I’m struggling to articulate and make sense of what qualities we would like. What sort of qualities do you think comes to mind with Inès, out of interest? (I ask this of all posters too btw!) For me, I guess we wanted something reasonably classic but also a bit cool (think Inès de La Fressange) and short and zippy too I guess. We thought it was pretty but not overly girly like something like… Amandine perhaps. That was our view anyway!

Aurelie is so sweet but Aurelia is so popular around here! For good reason I think.

This kind of name is what we’re after I think. A couple of syllables. Pretty. Not too difficult in terms of pronunciation. Thank you.

I know a Thibault and a Loic to add the consideration for boys names.

Sparsely · 29/03/2024 22:03

For a boy, I really like Thibault (which I think can also be spelled Thibaud
It's half 3 Mukateers, half T-Bone steak.

MumChp · 29/03/2024 22:04

I would go for Adèle as well. But I know a great and strong woman called that.

NC2025 · 29/03/2024 22:08

Gaspard?

Delphine?

Love Laurent despite my husband saying a boy here will just get called Lauren and told he has a girl’s name. It’s on my longlist. As is Yves. (He said the same about that too.) Raphaël and Camille too which you’ve said.

Olivier is gorgeous too but Oliver is too popular and I have an ex boyfriend called Oliver so it has negative connotations and unfortunately he immediately comes to mind. 😳 I much prefer Olivier mind. Some names I much prefer the English equivalent.
