First attempt at a girl’s name list

Hi everyone,

We have recently found out baby #2 is a girl and have started thinking about names. What are your thoughts on?:

Alice
Laura
Lara
Jessica
Katherine/Catherine (Kate)

One of my best friends is called Jessica, which makes me a little unsure about using it, but as she lives in New Zealand we will rarely actually see each other in person.

We also like the following but have some reservations:

Felicity (don’t like the nicknames)
Abigail (Abby doesn’t go too well with our surname)
Isabelle / Isabella (popularity, and we disagree on which version)
Sophie / Sophia (popularity)

Anything else we might like?

Middle name has already been decided after a family member and pretty much does with all the options above.

Baby’s sister is called Matilda.

Thank you!

I like Katherine and Matilda or Alice and Matilda

other ideas:
Hannah
Cecily
Juliet
Frances
Beatrice

I dislike Lara - seems faddy and it's usually nickname for Laura, while Laura is somehow dated. Jessica is fine.

heldinadream · 12/02/2024 13:37

There are so many nicknames for Felicity, do you dislike them all?
My younger is Felicity (so I'm biased obviously!😍) She gets called Feli, Fels, Flick, Fliss, Flickster. A couple more I can't think of. It's a lovely name and means happiness and bliss and blessings.

notknowledgeable · 12/02/2024 13:39

Katherine! and kate - beautiful

KirstenBlest · 12/02/2024 13:45

Alice, Laura, Jessic, Katherine/Catherine are all lovely
If you are going to use Kate, use Katherine not Catherine to avoid the change of initial.

Lara is ok but falls into all the Clara/Zara and Lily/Lyla/Lyra/Lana type names so seems a bit meh

Felicity - too long, use as a middle name to avoid the shrtenings
Abigail - really like it
Isabelle / Isabella / Sophia - done to the point of being meh
Sophie - too many Sophia/Sofias

Onelife2024 · 12/02/2024 13:53

Alice gets my vote - a gorgeous name and goes beautifully with Matilda!

I also love Lara, Laura, Jessica, Katherine (Kate), Sophie and Abigail! We have similar tastes I think!

I completely agree with you about Felicity - I like the full name but it’s too long to realistically avoid shortening and the short versions are a bit informal for work etc (just in my opinion)

As I say, Alice is my top choice. Jessica is second. Abigail and Sophie third. Katherine / Kate, Laura and Lara fourth. But I’d be very happy to use or be called any of them!

Good luck choosing :)

Matilda and..
Alice
Catherine - Cate

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 13/02/2024 13:09

great names!!

Alice, Katherine and Jessica are the best of your list.

Laura and Lara just seem too beige to me.

Personally I’d scrap the ones below , Sophie/Isabelle etc are just way too popular. I love Felicity and the nickname Flick but if you don’t then remove it from your list as it’s a name that will get nicknames

Felicity (don’t like the nicknames)
Abigail (Abby doesn’t go too well with our surname)
Isabelle / Isabella (popularity, and we disagree on which version)
Sophie / Sophia (popularity)

MKWarrier · 13/02/2024 13:45

Thank you so much for all your feedback! It has confirmed a lot of what I was thinking, which is useful. I hadn’t really thought about the trend in L names, but definitely see how Laura / Lyra might blend into the crowd.

Some interesting other suggestions too - I hadn’t considered Beatrice or Juliet before, so definitely a couple to mull over. I love Grace but sadly DH doesn’t (and based on her parents she is also unlikely to be graceful!).

@heldinadream I love the name Felicity, and agree the meaning is lovely! Sadly none of the nicknames appeal, and we always shorten names in our house so that’s an issue. Would Izzy be too much of a stretch as a shortened version, do you think?

I have an Isabelle and a Felicity, so I love both. Lissy is often a shortening for Felicity and similar to Izzy. I also like Jessica and Alice from your list, also like Kate but just as a standalone name.

Some others on our list were
Faye
Ember
Meredith
Penelope
Beatrix

Alice - I absolutely adore this. Such a classic, gorgeous and cute name!

Laura - boring and a bit dated

Lara - not my personal style but it's OK

Jessica - boring and a bit dated

Katherine - too dated

Felicity - I do like this but understand your concerns about the nicknames! I know of a 'Fizz' nn for Felicity which I do think is cute though

Abigail - hate this name

Isabelle/Isabella - I love this, Isabelle more so. Or spelled Isobel. Belle or Izzy as nicknames are both super cute, I love it!

Sophie/Sophia - too popular

horah · 13/02/2024 20:49

Other suggestions:

Anna/Annabelle
Darcy
Evelyn
Fern
Georgia
Harper
Holly
Imogen
Jemima
Lola
Lena
Martha
Ottillie
Olive
Rose
Theodora
Verity
Willa
Zara

My names Jessica Laura so that gets my vote

Watchthedoormat · 13/02/2024 20:52

Love Laura.
I also really like Alice.
Both classic and strong with a touch of elegance.

blitzen · 13/02/2024 20:55

Catherine

InTheRainOnATrain · 13/02/2024 20:55

Love Alice, especially with Matilda. Quite like Isabelle but v popular. Felicity also nice. The rest are all perfectly ok names but dare I say it dated? 😬 If you add in 2 Emmas and a Sarah and you’ve basically register of my class at school (born 89)…

MKWarrier · 13/02/2024 21:03

@InTheRainOnATrain yes you’re absolutely right - I’d noticed this too! Clearly I have a very 80s taste in names! I hated my own name as a kid (I like it now) so maybe that’s why I gravitate towards the names that were popular at the time.

I’m feeling a lot of Alice love on here, and it’s definitely a front runner for me - not sure about DH at the moment but we have plenty of time still. I like that both DDs would have a strong connection to a children’s book with the Matilda/Alice combination.

Do you think Alice would get Al or Ali a lot? That’s the only thing that really puts me off.

I have an Alice and her name never gets shortened. She’s 12 and loves her name.

Alice is the loveliest name on your list in my opinion.

Felice
Fabienne
Annabel
Gabrielle
Catriona
