Hello,

How is the name Ava pronounced in the Uk?

Is A like apple or A like "ey" from hey?

So A-va or Ey-va?

They’re definitely not the same - I have an Eva! Ava is ay-va, Eva is ee-va

But I know an Eva pronounced Ava in the German fashion. Eva can be Eeva or Ayva.

Whataretheodds · 25/01/2024 01:07

E- sounds like ee in bee 🐝
Elizabeth - E
Elaine

I wouldn't pronounce them like that. I'd pronounce the first E as in Egg.

MissMoan · 25/01/2024 01:28

Av (as in 'Crave') A (as in 'uh')

mathanxiety · 25/01/2024 04:57

Ayva - Ava
Ayda - Ada

Eeva - Eva
Evv-uh-lin - Evelyn

Evv-ee (Evie rhymes with heavy as far as I'm concerned).

Ayva - Ava
Ayda - Ada

Eeva - Eva
Evv-uh-lin - Evelyn

Evv-ee (Evie rhymes with heavy as far as I'm concerned).

Agree with these except Evie = eee-vee. I know 3! Never heard it rhyme with heavy. Only like Stevie!

Weefreetiffany · 25/01/2024 05:10

Ava like the beginning of the word aviation or then “uh”. Similar word root (Latin?) relating to flying/birds.

there’s an Amy win house song where she sings about a girl called Ava, I’ve always pronounced it the way she does in that song.

I say Ava - rhymes with Java, lava, Lara, Guava and Cadaver.
AHV-uh. I like the French pronunciation.

TheaBrandt · 25/01/2024 05:31

Please take into account Ava / Eve type names have been absolutely endemic over the last 15 years. Sick to death of them to be honest.

Caspianberg · 25/01/2024 05:44

Ay-va ( like ay in day)
Ee-va -( ee like bee)

German Eva is like Ey-fa (ey in hey)

Evie, Ava, Ivy, Evelyn, Eva...

At one point a third of the girls in dds class were named one of the above names. I mean perfectly nice names but really?! Got confusing as well.

Honeybeebuzz · 25/01/2024 12:25

It would be Ey-va like hey-va in the first instance for most people I believe

Thank you all!

I am looking for a girls name that is pronounced like Ever in the Uk. Not Evan that is male, not Everly that has the ly at the end ! Just to be pronounced like Ever.

Please help!

@Unicornpuzzle , there's Evi (Dutch, I think EVV-y), Ewa (Polish EVVah) and Efa (Welsh EVV-ah). People who don't speak the actual language will probably say Evie, Eva and Eefa though.

Riverlee · 25/01/2024 15:42

I’d be pronounce Ava and Eva differently.

Ava Ay -va

Eva - Ee - Va

Everyone says this on here but DD (8yrs) is Ava and we've met literally one other one since she was born.

OP seen you've got a specific sound in mind but don't be put off by a name being "popular", generally it just means it's a nice name that the majority will be able to pronounce and spell.

JennyGracexx · 25/01/2024 15:56

@iwonderwhatsinside same, my daughter is Ava and met one other little girl with the same name. Never met another Eve, Eva, Evie etc.

The only name I can think of that sounds similar to 'Ever' (which isn't Everly), is Heather 🤷‍♀️

Well how about Ever?
The actor Robert Carradine named his daughter Ever, as did Milla Jovovich.

The R would be pronounced if she lived in some parts of the UK, Ireland, and North America. But in SE England and many other parts, it would be 'Evva'.

You'd have to go with Eva and tell people you want it pronounced the Polish way. My friend Eva I originally said as Ay-va as I'd only seen it written down and I assume Ay-va rather than Ee-va but I was corrected to Ever.

But any name like that you are going to get different pronunciations. It's just inevitable.

SmallestInTheClass · 25/01/2024 20:37

Sadly, there isn't an girl's name pronounced Ever in English.

Clearinguptheclutter · 25/01/2024 20:41

You could call her Eva and just pronounce it the Polish/ Eastern European way. Which is Ever/evva.

OrlandointheWilderness · 25/01/2024 20:56

I have an Ava who is 12 and I've only met two others much younger. She was named after Ava Gardner.

EconomyClassRockstar · 25/01/2024 21:00

I know an Eva and an Eeva that are pronounced like Ever although this Eeva is more like Ehhhver.

Mine is 22 and also named after Gardner. To which my best friends' Mum said, "Oh, you've named your beautiful new baby after a narcissistic alcoholic. How nice" 😀
