I have a daughter with a Welsh name- I'm Welsh and live in England. we don't know what we're having but if it's a girl we'd like another Welsh name. We both really like Manon but something is niggling me, maybe it's the Man. I do think it's a beautiful name though. Thoughts of Manon or any other suggestions? Thanks!

It will be ‘Man’. I live in Wales. I only know of one.

rainbowbee · 23/01/2024 23:34

I only know one. She's French and very beautiful. I think it's a lovely name.

It has football connotations, as in 'man on' (when a player is under pressure from an opposing player) and that would put me off, I think.

I take it your DH isn't a footie fan?

I play football twonor three times a week and have never linked these two.
I think it's a beautiful

Nice. Definitely use it.

Triskelled · 24/01/2024 07:01

How is it pronounced in Wales, exactly? I only know it as a French name, with the second syllable nasalised and the final consonant not really sounded — is it literally ‘Man-on’?

PeterRabbitt · 24/01/2024 07:43

@missedabigbit Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas.

My daughter is Manon and we have French and Welsh connections. It is pronounced differently in each country - M'non or MAnnon. She only heard the football connection when she went to university in the UK but luckily finds it quite funny

Manon is beautiful and is quite simple to learn but not common.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 24/01/2024 13:20

@saraclara , I don't know how it sounds in Welsh
MAN-onn
@user1492757084 , it's very popular in Wales.

I have a Manon! DS1 (her older brother) would have been Manon had he been a girl as we loved the name (still do). DH is half Welsh & his parents lived in Wales so we came across the name when visiting them - we also knew it from the Manon des Sources film which we both love too!

My Manon actually plays football (a lot!) and I spent a few games early on wondering why everyone kept shouting her name 😂. We live in England and have met a few other Manons but really only a few.

It's what you shout when a player is being chased down, particularly if they're not aware (coming from behind/rear side etc). Definite football terminology that's still used.

I guess the OP wondered what people thought of it and I can only go with what I thought, really.

In the grand scale of names, it's nowhere near a bad one.

Oh I use it all the time! But just never linked the two.

UserNameChange6 · 26/01/2024 20:39

Yes one of my favourite names! Go for it!

GinBlossom94 · 26/01/2024 20:44

Makes me think of The Craft film, it's the name of the God they summon

ARealFake · 26/01/2024 21:01

purpleme12 · 23/01/2024 23:21

I quite like it.

It made me think of The Craft. Which is not a bad thing I love that film!

Me too! First thing I thought of - no bad thing op

Lovely name! Re the football connection - I was captain of my uni football team and one of the girls had played for a while and said when she first started she thought there was French girl on the team because everyone kept calling Man-on!

lioneggs · 30/01/2024 20:55

Thank you for this my husband will love it!

@Laureatus haha brilliant.

Really shocked at all the positive feedback. Thank you for all positive and negatives!

Will update in April!❤️

I love Manon as a girls' name

Also Morgan if you're worried about the Man element

DocOck · 31/01/2024 11:46

To me, it's a Dutch name. I don't like it at all (sorry). What about Maren?

gwdihwfach29 · 01/02/2024 13:53

My daughter is a ‘Manon’, it’s a beautiful name. It’s both Welsh & French. I like the soft French pronunciation.

sunflowerpinks · 01/02/2024 13:55

I only know German Manons pronounced like Marion without the ri, so Man-on.

sunflowerpinks · 01/02/2024 13:56

And I don't think it sounds feminine at all

DaNiYmaOHyd · 01/02/2024 15:41

@Cariadxx Also Morgan if you're worried about the Man element
Morgan is a man's name in Wales.

I love Manon - conjures up someone gorgeous and interesting. Unusual name but not too unusual. Strong name too
