How can they not know it's pronounced Finn? Why would they think it was pronounced Fee-on? Definitely tell them because everyone else would be pronouncing their child's name correctly except them.

In England I think that vast, vast majority of people would pronounce it Fee-on as they aren't overly likely to have known someone with that name previously and it's the phonetic pronunciation if it.

Just say "I thought the Irish boys name was pronounced Finn, and the Welsh girls name was Fi-on. These Celtic names are very confusing"

There's a BBC show on Iplayer called Hidden Assets set in Limerick. They also pronounce it as Fi-on which made me wonder is this this the correct way. As as Irish person with a Fionn in the family I'd be interested to hear what others think.

How would they know it's pronounced Finn? If they are English speaking with no Irish heritage?

I really don't think they would. For a girl maybe but a boy would always be Finn and if they were not sure then even a quick Google would confirm that.

If the child had already been born and named, I'd agree. But he hasn't, so there's room for manoeuvre.

The Welsh girl's name is Ffion. F in Welsh is 'v' in English, Ff is 'f'.

Fion in Welsh would be pronounced Vion

Why is it rude and ignorant it's true. You can't just decide to change the way the name is pronounced. Fionn for a boy is pronounced Finn and the poor lad will have an eternity of having to correct people who are actually pronouncing it correctly.

I know a Welsh Ffion and would not know Irish Fion was Finn as I have never heard of it.

Yes I meant how can the parents have chosen the name and not understood the way it's pronounced, sorry if that wasn't clear. It's mind-blowing to me that they'd choose a name they didn't actually know how to pronounce properly.

My SIL shared their favourite name with family for their soon due DS.
It’s a beautiful name, Fionn. We live in England (no strong Irish heritage on our side of the family, not sure about hers) but being an obviously Celtic name I wondered about its meaning and put it into google.
Now the problem arises, they are pronouncing it Fi-on and I’ve found it’s pronounced Finn. Do I say something or just keep my beak out!?

It's not pronounced either way , there are some good YouTube videos on how to pronounce it but their way its definitely closer than yours.
