Opinions on the name Seth...and suitable middle names

Hi, I really like the name Seth (and have almost persuaded my DH) but am reluctant to share it with my RL friends and family until after the birth. Does anyone have an opinion on the name? I', looking for a name that's slightly different, but not too 'out there' and if possible not overly popular as i don't want it to date quickly.

I also think i need a fairly long middle name in order to create a nicely 'balanced' sounding full name with our two syllable surname (ie Seth duh-duh-duh duh-duh). I'd like a fairly traditional name and something that goes with Seth in terms of style. I like William but DH doesn't, our other thought was Benjamin which is ok but i'm not wild about.

I don't personally like it but it's what you think of it that matters.

My DS is Seth so obviously I think its a fab name! He is Seth Daniel

I like Seth, and all the Seths I've known have been lovely.

I like Seth quite a lot but I am struggling with the middle name a bit. I think it should be something a little longer though.

I really like Ben but wasn't keen on Benjamin so I thought about calling DS2 Benedict which I really love.

DH wasn't feeling brave though so DS2 is Jacob.

That might go with Seth - Seth Jacob

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. And yes, i'm aware of the old man from emmerdale factor - am hoping that people will forget that after a short while (also my DH is a farmer so maybe it's appropriate?!).

I think it's a lovely name, but it's worth remembering that a lot of children have a problem with pronouncing "th" and/or "s" sounds. As do a lot of people in Kent. If my ds had been called Seth, he would have called himself "Theth" until he was 5, and all his school friends would still be calling him "Sef"!

Ha ha, thanks Seeker, i hadn't thought of that. This is my first baby and there's all sorts of things that wouldn't occur to me - partly why i'm open to suggestions from experienced mums on here!

I like it but it is very popular these days, so you need to be sure that you will be happy with that.

Seth isn't in the top 100 names for last year so i didn't think it was that popular, though it may be one that's about to shoot up the chart? i don't know of any round my area, but then i don't know many small people!

I know tons of little people and not a Seth among them. Mind you I do live in Kent - so maybe people are avoiding the "Sef" issue!

I discovered Seth about a month after ds2 was born - At the time I really wanted to change his name to it but dh wouldn't let me. So would be very if you used it!

When I mentioned it to a friend she said that it reminded her of Buffy - never watched it so don't know if that's good or bad.

And I live in the midlands and don't know any at all, I've got 3 dc (youngest 6 months) so know loads of little people too.

Seriously, though, it is a lovely name, and it's not wall to wall popular (unlike Ethan) so if you like it, go for it?

Seth is my DH's name. I really like it. His middle name is Alexander so that might fit your bom bom-bom-bom requirements for the two names.

Certainly it's quite unusual for in the UK for people of his age (don't know that many children, but not aware of it being hugely popular), but in a way where people have heard of it, so he doesn't get asked all the time how it should be spelled. It's unusual without being confusing in any way iykwim.

It's a very popular name in the US. I lived there for a while and it was really weird meeting lots of people with my DH's "unusual" name as I'm so used to him being the only one

I've not really come across any meaning for the name, just that it has hebrew origins as Seth was one of the sons of Adam. Is there an undesirable meaning?
