Opinions on the name Seth...and suitable middle names

Hi, I really like the name Seth (and have almost persuaded my DH) but am reluctant to share it with my RL friends and family until after the birth. Does anyone have an opinion on the name? I', looking for a name that's slightly different, but not too 'out there' and if possible not overly popular as i don't want it to date quickly.

I also think i need a fairly long middle name in order to create a nicely 'balanced' sounding full name with our two syllable surname (ie Seth duh-duh-duh duh-duh). I'd like a fairly traditional name and something that goes with Seth in terms of style. I like William but DH doesn't, our other thought was Benjamin which is ok but i'm not wild about.

Many thank in advance for any suggestions and/or comments.

Its not really undesirable as such. Seth was the younger brother of Cain and Abel so was traditionally given to a child whose older sibling had died. It is becoming much more mainstream though and not everyone associates it anyway. Its not as obvious as Jesus or Delilah or something where nearly everyone would immeadiatly think of the one in the Bible. Most people would think Emmerdale if anything.

My 2yo nephew is a Seth, I like the name but I do know quite a few little Seths of 2 and under - I think it's quickly becoming popular. not that that's necessarily a problem.

Fennel · 14/03/2008 11:09

The little Seths I know are in Manchester and Devon.

callmewhatyoulike · 14/03/2008 11:11

I'm sorry but it all I can think of is that old bloke in Emmerdale when I hear that name.

ChicaLovesHerLocalGreengrocer · 14/03/2008 11:14

Isn't one of the rich kids in The OC called Seth?

ChicaLovesHerLocalGreengrocer · 14/03/2008 11:15

That's what I think of when I see the name, anyway. And he's a bit whiney.

Fennel · 14/03/2008 11:16

I think of sexy Rufus Sewell playing Seth in Cold Comfort farm. Mmm.

Rufus was one of my shortlisted names for boys.

josta · 14/03/2008 14:21

I like Seth. If it were me I would probably put some long with it like William, Alexander, Andrew etc.My minds gone blank now and I can't think of any long names lol.

MascaraOHara · 14/03/2008 14:24

Seth is gorgeous name! How about Seth Andrew

ProfessorGrammaticus · 14/03/2008 14:29

tinylady · 14/03/2008 14:30

Pinkchampagne · 14/03/2008 17:27

I love the name Seth.

Walnutshell · 14/03/2008 17:28

Seth.

Hmm.

I'm trying.

But no.

Sounds a bit lispy.

But if you like it, I agree that a longish middle name would work well. What does your surname begin with?

beautifuldays · 14/03/2008 17:30

i love the name Seth was going to call dd that if she was a boy (although dh wasn't very keen!)

BellaBear · 14/03/2008 17:32

My son (8 weeks today!) is called Seth! We got the idea from Seth Lakeman. I love it. Obviously.

mrsruffallo · 14/03/2008 17:34

Walnutshell · 14/03/2008 17:36

I love it and it was VERY high on my list for DS. Unfortunately my DH can't pronounce his th's (as has already been mentioned, is quite common) so was a no-no

AdelaideJo · 14/03/2008 17:41

My baby, due on Monday, is going to be a Seth. And aside from a few comments regarding Seth-the-moustached-gamekeeper from Emmerdale Farm, most people have been really receptive.

I think its a way cool name for a boy!

silver28 · 15/03/2008 07:55

Hi Walnutshell. Our surname begins with a K.

Reaction to the name seems mixed - as expected - but overall more positive than negative, which is good.

Sidge · 15/03/2008 13:05

I'm not keen on Seth, sorry.

I see it more as a noise than a name

I love William though, so versatile.

Katiekin · 17/03/2008 23:14

how about Seth Isaac?

Walnutshell · 18/03/2008 08:57

said quickly that sounds like some sort of medical upset
