Sicily for a girl?

I'm a big fan of this but not sure if it's a bit too cliche being a region of Italy. Thoughts?

I've always loved the name.

LadyWhineglass · 02/12/2023 18:14

Don’t you mean Cecily which is an actual girl’s name?

torpids · 02/12/2023 18:14

Cicely is pronounced the same way, and is a proper name. Might be easier.

AudiobookListener · 02/12/2023 18:15

Cecily sounds almost the same and is a lovely (real) name. Personally, I'm not keen on place names for kids.

CremeEggThief · 02/12/2023 18:16

Cicely is the normal spelling...

Ofa · 02/12/2023 18:16

Call her Cecily or Cicely if you must (although at primary school the boys may call her Silly).

Do not call her Sicily, that is ridiculous.

muchalover · 02/12/2023 18:17

I think throughout her life she will have people assuming it's spelled wrong and she will have to explain it. The actual name is lovely and unusual anyway.

PurpleChrayne · 02/12/2023 18:22

Very hissy and unpleasant. A sly name.

Princessvelour · 02/12/2023 18:23

Cicely would be better

MaloneMeadow · 02/12/2023 18:26

Sicily is awful, at least name her Cicely to avoid the cringey Italy connotations. Cecily is much nicer

AutumnNymph · 02/12/2023 18:28

Sicily so silly!

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 02/12/2023 18:30

Don't be so silly!

This

Sicily as a name is beyond ridiculous.

I think girls tease just as much as boys! Although according to teacher friends people aren't picked on for names anymore as unusual ones are very normal.

But yes, Cicely is a nice name spelt that way. OP, if you wanted to name her after the island it's Sicilia in Italian, which might stop the potential cicely/cecily spelling confusion.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/12/2023 18:33

Cicely would sound exactly the same and be an actual name, so I would go for that. I like it, but prefer Cecily.

makeminealargeoneagain · 02/12/2023 18:34

Sorry. Think it's awful.

Itneverrainsitpissesitdown · 02/12/2023 19:07

I like both Cicely and Cecily, but never with an S.

theduchessofspork · 02/12/2023 19:20

Cicely is said the same as Sicily so go for that, otherwise it’s one of those tragic Hello mag names where you mark where they were conceived / where you had your honeymoon etc

I think it’s lispy personally and prefer Cecily or Selene

muddyford · 02/12/2023 19:21

Ridiculous.

clary · 02/12/2023 19:22

Yes this. When I was a teacher I taught some DC with extraordinary names, frankly, but to the other students they were just "Dustbin"*

@DawnieOwl agree with others, Cecily or Cicily (said slightly differently IME) are both lovely names. Siciliy is an Italian island.

*not a real example

idontlikealdi · 02/12/2023 19:26

You need a C!

peaceinourtime · 02/12/2023 23:17

Please use Cecily wiTh a c. Place names are fine but when there is an actual name which is the same, using the actual name is better.

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/12/2023 23:18

You mean Cecily or Cecile surely?

coldcallerbaiter · 02/12/2023 23:20

Sicily is not a good idea it is silly

43ontherocksporfavor · 02/12/2023 23:29

Celia is even better!
