Sicily for a girl?

I'm a big fan of this but not sure if it's a bit too cliche being a region of Italy. Thoughts?

Cicely is nice. Very Victorian.

Sicily is a bit Sopranos.

UsingChangeofName · 02/12/2023 23:54

Although there is nothing wrong with the name, I personally am not keen, but, if you do use it, please spell it like the girl's name, with a C.

CurrentHun · 03/12/2023 00:11

Cicely is too much of a pain. 95% of people that person meets will call them Sy-silly which doesn’t sound good and isn’t the actual name you want.

CEcily - not sure if that’s a derivative of Cecil. It’s not great sounding. Sess-illy.

Celia, Cecilia, Celine? Selena? Serena? Selene? Sissy? Cece?

CallieQ · 03/12/2023 01:08

No
It's a place name

This

Sicily as a name is beyond ridiculous.

Why is it beyond ridiculous? You have Florence, Siena, Roma

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2023 17:08

Sicily.... interesting history, the mafia and an active volcano?

Hm, not sure that would bode well!Grin

autienotnaughty · 03/12/2023 17:11

I love Cecily it reminds me of a character in What Katie Did.

CrapGoat · 03/12/2023 17:14

She'll get a lot of 'Don't be Si Silly!'

Twelve8Ts · 03/12/2023 17:22

Cicely is an old fashioned girls name and I think it’s beautiful!

AddictedToBooks · 03/12/2023 17:43

Beautiful name but I would consider spelling it "Cicely" or "Cecily"

Daisybuttercup12345 · 03/12/2023 21:56

Cecily.
Even they they get called cissy or silly.

NuffSaidSam · 03/12/2023 21:59

I think it's too close to Cecily.

It's one thing having a place name, but another when it's really close to being an actual name.

Cecily is a horrible name though. But better than Sicily.

Imagine if she can't pronounce her S's!

flowerchild2000 · 03/12/2023 22:00

It sounds pretty and is so unique. I love it.

RosaElize · 05/12/2023 20:28

I much prefer Cicely, but for balance, I actually have a Sicily on my family tree from many years ago!

blueshoes · 05/12/2023 20:30

No

ginteio · 14/12/2023 08:52

I would not use Sicily as a name. Too geographical. Try Cecily instead.

peanutbuttertoasty · 14/12/2023 08:55

Sicily is the name of a place, Cecily is the name of a girl.

TheCatfordCat · 14/12/2023 08:56

My daughter knew a Cecily at PS. She was known as Sissy. Not my taste, really.

AuntieStella · 14/12/2023 09:01

I'd spell it Cicely - nice name (not one I'd personally choose)

Or possibly Cecily - I pronounce that differently, but in some accents/speech habits it comes out the same (just as Cecil can be "sisil" for the old-fashioned posh)

MargotBamborough · 14/12/2023 10:10

Agree with the others.

Cecily, Cicely or Cecilia, yes. Sicily, no.

BurntOrangeAutumn · 14/12/2023 10:13

PurpleChrayne · 02/12/2023 18:22

Very hissy and unpleasant. A sly name.

Wtf 😂

medianewbie · 14/12/2023 10:22

Hmm (I'm not a fan of place names)
How about 'Cecelia' (as in the old Simon & Garfunkel song) or Selina ?

Charlingspont · 14/12/2023 10:24

It's 'Cicely'. Better to use the proper spelling.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 14/12/2023 10:33

I used to know a Cicely, she would be over 100 now. She used to get called Cici for short, which I think is quite nice.

ActDottie · 14/12/2023 10:42

AudiobookListener · 02/12/2023 18:15

Cecily sounds almost the same and is a lovely (real) name. Personally, I'm not keen on place names for kids.
