If so, how would you pronounce Elena?

Yes

Elena like Helena without the H.
Kind of elaine-ah

Eleanor is Ellie-nor

QueSyrahSyrah · 21/11/2023 23:02

I wouldn't be sure I'm right, but Elena would be eh-lay-nah.

Pradder · 21/11/2023 23:02

If I say it carefully, I would say “ell-in-oor” and “ell-ehn-ah”. In real life I probably say them both like the second.

I think regional accents will change pronunciation a lot.

NuffSaidSam · 21/11/2023 23:02

The Elena in my life is Eh-lay-na.

Eleanor is El-uh-nah (or El-uh-nor if she's talking to someone who is American or Irish)

Scruffington · 21/11/2023 23:04

The Elena I know is Spanish and it sounds (more or less) like uh-lay-nah

Eleanor I'd pronounce as ellen-urr

WanderingWitches · 21/11/2023 23:04

Eleanor- Ellen Ore
Elena- Ellen Ah

User6761 · 21/11/2023 23:04

Yes -
Eh-len-or
Eh-lay-na

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 21/11/2023 23:05

Or is a different sound to a. So yes

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 21/11/2023 23:06

Definitely different. Eh-le-nor vs Eh-lay-na

TenThousandSpoons · 21/11/2023 23:06

Eleanor - ell en uh
Elena - Ell ay nah

SusanKennedyshouldLTB · 21/11/2023 23:07

Here are completely different names.

eleanor is either eh- len-or or eh-len- a
elena is eh- LAY- na

TedWilson · 21/11/2023 23:07

Sing the theme tune to Elena of Avalor!

Definitely different pronunciation to traditional Eleanor.

Whiskerson · 21/11/2023 23:08

Elena is pronounced differently in different languages. So I would wait to be guided. It's one of those names I don't "hear" when I read, if you know what I mean.

I can see how it could end up sounding like Eleanor. Unless Eleanor gets pronounced with a "nor"!

Holidayhell22 · 21/11/2023 23:09

Yes.

Fourlegsandatail · 21/11/2023 23:09

Eleanor= L-N-or
Elena= L-lay-na

MarinaDuval · 21/11/2023 23:10

I think there's a regional aspect to this. I say Ellen-uh for Eleanor and E-lay-na for Elena.

LoveBluey · 21/11/2023 23:31

Sing the theme tune to Elena of Avalor!

Definitely different pronunciation to traditional Eleanor.

I did exactly this! I now have the theme song as an ear worm!

UsingChangeofName · 21/11/2023 23:35

Eleanor - I'd say Elle-Len-Nor (Fairly even syllables but perhaps slight emphasis on 'Nor')

Elena - I'd ask if they were Elle- Lee- Na or Elle - Lane - Na (emphasis on middle syllable for both)

Ihatethenewlook · 21/11/2023 23:37

Didn’t you get enough replies on your last thread

Vexxa · 21/11/2023 23:39

I actually decided against Eleanor as a name for DD2 because I got so confused about how I would pronounce it let alone anyone else.

Wanttobeok · 21/11/2023 23:41

El-an-ore

e-LAIN-a or EL-ana

JztBlzd · 21/11/2023 23:42

Totally different names to me. Elena would be 'el-eh-nah'

SurelyNotThis · 21/11/2023 23:42

Ellen-or (Eleanor)

And Elaine-a (Elena)

ScabbyHorse · 21/11/2023 23:48

The stress is on the first syllable of Eleanor and on the the second syllable in Elena.

PickledScrump · 21/11/2023 23:48

Elena - El-eh-na

Eleanor - el-ah-nor, but often ends up el-eh-nuh. also heard El-lay-nuh. All the ones I know have ended up Ellie though
