What do you think of the name Vivienne? Any negative associations I should know about?

Vividness is a very pretty name

SammyScrounge · 19/11/2023 00:28

Sorry predictive text. I meant Vivienne of course.

haribosmarties · 19/11/2023 01:06

I think it's beautiful

fixies · 19/11/2023 01:11

Love it!

pastypirate · 19/11/2023 01:24

Love it. Prefer Vi as in vye as a diminutive over Viv.

I think it's very classy and she won't be called Vivienne whatever your surname is for every because it's unlikely she will meet that many others.

VivienneDelacroix · 19/11/2023 01:25

It's a lovely name, and French feminine spelling Vivienne is definitely the nicest. Vivien is the masculine version (although pronounced the same in English - they aren't in French).

DiscoBeat · 19/11/2023 01:27

Beautiful name

CherryMyBrandy · 19/11/2023 03:28

Don't like it. Don't like "Viv" which people will use. And reminds me of the Young Ones.

PickledScrump · 19/11/2023 17:46

I absolutely love Vivienne, the thought of people pronouncing it as Vivian put me off though. It’s a gorgeous name

nameXname · 19/11/2023 18:55

Vivian is the masculine form, not as previous poster says. Just like - as a different previous poster says - the immensely talented sportsman Viv Richardson.

In the UK, Vivien is the female form - as in he beautiful but doomed actress Vivien Leigh.

To my mind, the French 'nne' version is too fussy and too frilly. In English, the spelling also changes the pronounciation, from Vi-vi-en to (IMHO) the less elegant Vivi-ENNE.

Vivian is a man's name. Vivien is the usual feminine form.

By the time a baby Vivienne goes to school I highly doubt a single child there would have heard of The Young Ones, or Pretty Woman. Viv Nicholson who won the Pools in the 1970s? Clutching at straws with that one.

I love it, it reminds me of the actress Vivienne Leigh, and I prefer that spelling, much prettier.

She was Vivien Leigh. She was born Vivian Hartley. She was advised to change to the Vivien spelling as it was more feminine.

Tillyteacup · 19/11/2023 20:38

It’s gorgeous! I have a good friend with the same name and she is an absolute treasure so I’m biased 😉. She does get called “Viv” though sometimes which I think is quite unattractive sounding.

peaceinourtime · 20/11/2023 11:35

I love the nickname Vivi. It must be spelt Vivienne, Vivian looks male and also ugly.

Vivienne = lovely
Others I associate with Vivienne ..

Victoria
Genevieve
Madeleine
Adrienne
Christienne
Solenne
Java
Lucienne
Georgienne
Julienne
Felicienne
Sebastienne
Sienna

The French pronunciation of Genevieve is possibly my favourite name

KirstenBlest · 20/11/2023 11:40

@peaceinourtime , that's because Vivian is a man's name. Vivien is fine unless you want the stress to be on the -enne.

The Vivvy-ENNE pronunciation is not great. The French pronunciation is fine.

Kiwilime · 09/12/2023 13:20

I've never seen that film actually! Didn't know it was the main character's name.

In terms of other associations, it's also the name of a sorceress from Arthurian legend who seduces and traps Merlin.

peaceinourtime · 09/12/2023 15:39

Vivi is a real cute shortening , I love it

KirstenBlest · 09/12/2023 16:02

I wouldn't know how to say Vivi. It looks like a roman numeral.

Alloveragain3 · 09/12/2023 16:48

Lovely and elegant.
I'd use V as a nickname

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 10/12/2023 00:04

For what it’s worth, the Young Ones character was Vyvyan.

Kokeshi123 · 12/12/2023 06:04

I like it, as long as you can insist on Vivi rather than Viv as a shortening.

You can never insist on a diminutive - at least not after the first five years. Don’t use it if you can’t live with Viv.

Redhothoochycoocher · 12/12/2023 06:36

My DD is Vivien. We love it and so does she
