I'm due a baby next month and considering the name Laura.
Any opinions?
My mum said it's too 80s!

I don't think it's too 90s. It's a classic IMO.

PeachesMcQueen · 16/11/2023 15:30

Sorry but Laura is dull and boring. Of all the beautiful girls names that exist please don’t waste your opportunity to name your daughter and use Laura. It’s deadly dull and says ‘we really couldn’t be bothered to think up a more interesting name’
Poor thing, give her a better name

KirstenBlest · 16/11/2023 15:44

@PeachesMcQueen , what are the beautiful names?

SingingSands · 16/11/2023 17:27

I've always loved it - when I was a little girl I used to ask my Mum and Dad if I could change my name to Laura 😁

I have an 18yr old niece called Laura and think it's a lovely name.

Blinkityblonk · 16/11/2023 19:59

I don't get this about names. Why is Laura dull, and something like Lara or Cara very interesting? I think Laura has a lovely sound to it, but even if it didn't, I don't see the alternatives as 'interesting' or 'unusual' just variations on the same letters.

KirstenBlest · 16/11/2023 20:04

Laura is much nicer than Lara, IMO. I don't like Lyra at all. Cara is nice but Laura is classier.
Laura doesn't sound like the much-loved-on MN Aurora, which I don't like.

hels71 · 16/11/2023 20:09

I think it's a lovely name.

Mrsfussypants1 · 16/11/2023 20:38

I'd go for it, 80s 90s "normcore" grown up classic names are predicted to be making a comeback for 2024. I haven't met a Laura that's under 40, I think it's a refreshing change to the current popular names.

WildCherryBlossom · 21/11/2023 08:02

Laura is lovely.

Laura Meredith
Laura Marianne
Laura Cecile
Laura Gabrielle.

I think it can work with a longish middle name but I wouldn't use a middle name ending starting or ending in A

Whenwasthis · 22/11/2023 07:00

I think it's a bit of a dull and stale name for today. Kind of like Gill, Karen or Michelle
. IE from different time but not ready for a comeback.

ArtichokeAardvark · 22/11/2023 07:08

I have a Laura, aged 4 😊I don't know any other children with the same name, whereas there are 3 Lily's and umpteen Ottilie's in our friendship group. The nurse in the hospital when she was born said she hadn't seen a baby Laura in years!

Laura is lovely, it's classic, and it's not a name that carries any preconceptions or baggage. And everyone can spell it, which is a major plus for me!

KirstenBlest · 22/11/2023 08:10

It's nothing like Gill, Karen or Michelle.

Agree. Saint Laura was a martyr from the 9th century. Petrarch wrote love poetry to Laura de Noves, a French noblewoman, in the 1300s.

With all the respect in the world to the Gills, Karens and Michelles out there, I don’t think any of them fit the definition of ‘classic’ in the same way.

Little update.

Baby arrived yesterday.

I won't put a photo on here as she won't be on any social media but we have decided to call her Laura.

Thank you everybody for your feedback.

Mum still doesn't love it but I'm sure she will in time.

It’s great! Classic, and everyone knows how to spell it and pronounce it. It’s not weird, you’re not trying to be cute, clever, different. It isn’t eye-roll inducing. It’s a great name. Don’t overthink it.

Pharos · 22/11/2023 18:49

Yay! Congratulations and welcome to your little Laura.

LilyLemonade · 22/11/2023 19:51
