Lennsuey · 11/03/2008 15:22

I never thought choosing a girls name would be so difficult! We have chosen a boys name but are really struggling to decide on a girls!

We like the idea of a flexible name that can be shortened so here goes with a list for you all to scrutinise!

Jessica (Jess/Jessie)
Tallulah (Tally/Lulu)
Matilda (Tilly)
Delilah (Lila)
Sasha (Sash)
Yasmine (Yas)
Roxanne (Roxy)

Possible middle names will be:

Mary
May
Jane
June
Rose

Ok, opinions please, don't be shy!

I love all of them. Top favourite combo for me would be

Roxanne Rose

as I love alliteration in names (I know a lot of people don't.) Possibly Roxanne Mary in case she finds Roxanne a bit foxy sometimes and wants to downshift the impact.

Twinkie1 · 11/03/2008 15:24

Yasmine and Roxanne are gross but the others are pretty!

GooseyLoosey · 11/03/2008 15:24

Sasha and Yasmine are just not meant to be shortened IMO so would not go for either of those. Don't like Roxanne at all either.

Imawurzel · 11/03/2008 15:26

I liked jessica before we chose DD's name.
DH did then decided he didn't.
Sasha is nice.So is yasmine.
I kept thinking 'it's gotta see 'em through their ages, will it suit baby,teen,40's etc' and didn't want anything odd.
We were opposite, chose 3 girl names, Rachel, Imogen or Sophy. But couldn't decide on boys.
HAve to think of initals (sp) too.

largeginandtonic · 11/03/2008 15:30

Dolly Violet

TheMaskedPoster · 11/03/2008 15:37

ooo yes - I like Yasmin too .. infact it is on our short list for girls names (and by short I mean we only have about 4 on it!)

Good luck - all those names are lovely imo.

Lennsuey · 13/03/2008 10:24

DH is very keen on Tallulah, i like it but it's a bit out of my comfort zone! Trying to get my head around how I feel about that!

LaDiDaDi · 13/03/2008 10:33

I really like Matilda, really don't like Roxanne and not really fussed about the others. Think that Tallulah could be lovely but it sounds like a name to live up to iyswim.

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 13/03/2008 10:37

Jessica's my favourite.
Roxanne always reminds me of the police song

lou33 · 13/03/2008 10:38

i have a tallulah, most of her friends call her lula

dd1's middle name is delilah, which really wanted as her first name, but now exh wouldnt agree, so she became a lily

denbury · 13/03/2008 10:40

amy and jessica as first names and would have to be mary as a second name

shreddies · 13/03/2008 10:40

I love Matilda. How about Elizabeth (Libby, Lizzy)?

Lennsuey · 13/03/2008 10:45

Thanks for the posts, keep them coming!

On reflection i don't really like Roxanne, i agree about the police song! I have visions of my sister belting it out every time she sees LO as she's a big Police fan!

I do like Jessica a lot too but think it's very popular which i'm not knocking, I just don't want to conform that much!

Matilda - Tilda
Penelope - Penny or Nell
Phillipa or Piper - Pip
Elizabeth - libby or beth
Susannah - Susie
Amelia or Amelie - Milly
Mattia - matty
Cecelia - Cece
Beatrice - Bebe or Bea
Beatrix - trixie or Bea
Isabella - Izzy or Elle or Ellie or Ella
rosalyn - rose or rosie

from your list I like Jessica or Tallulah - lula though not lulu

hth, good luck ,its not easy I know!!

Hulababy · 13/03/2008 11:00

Matilda is my favourite. I love the name, and Tilly for short. If we have a second child this is top of our list for a girl.

I think Matilda Rose sounds lovely.

dizzydixies · 13/03/2008 11:09

evangeline - eve or evie
evelyn - eve, evie or lyn
samantha - sam
stephanie - steph
annabel - anna
felicity - flossie or flic
florence - flo or florrie
jennifer - jen
julie/julie - jules
gemima or Jemima - Jem
Josephine - Josie
Megan/margaret - Meg

hotpasty · 13/03/2008 11:14

I'll throw in our choice here - like it or loathe it, it's unusual and a sweet shortened version. Meriel - we call her Merry but she's Meriel at school. Means "of the sea"...

dizzydixies · 13/03/2008 11:18

its nice hotpasty you could also use Meridith too for Merry

Olivia for liv, livvie or Ollie

Lennsuey · 13/03/2008 11:41

Wow, loads of new suggestions! Names ending in 'a' seem more suitable as our surname is Tovey. You'd be amazed at how many names seem to rhyme with it!

I really like Matilda but i'm worried Tilly would sound daft and there would be lots of mickey taking!

Does anyone think a Christian name the has the same first letter as that of the surname is silly?

OP posts:
Beauregard · 13/03/2008 11:42

Matilda can also be shortened to Mattie.

scorpio1 · 13/03/2008 11:44

Lennsuey - I am having a DD soon and one of her names is going to be Jessamy. There is also Jessamine, you could use either of those instead of Jessica; less common. (i mean in numbers).

dizzydixies · 13/03/2008 12:03

what about
Camille - cam or millie
camilla - cam or millie or milla?
tabitha - tabby
tamara - tammy
georgina - georgie/gina
violet - vi
harriet - harry
jocelyn - joss
caroline - callie
kathleen/kaitlyn - kitty

right enough from me!

Hulababy · 13/03/2008 12:05

I know of a Tilly and she definitely desn't get any mickey taking for her name. It is pretty.

ingles2 · 13/03/2008 12:06

I met a Dulcie this week and thought it was adorable.
What do you reckon?

Lennsuey · 13/03/2008 12:10

I do like Tilly and Dulcie, but with the surname Tovey??!
