We already have a Martha Rose (surname 3 syllables) and I've just had a boy.

My DH likes Chester (it's a family name for him).
So we're thinking Chester James

Other options:
Rowan James
Ralph Anthony
Oscar Anthony/James

What do you think of Chester vs. the other options?

If there is any chance your child will go on a school trip to Chester to study the Romans, then no.

English place names surely have to be a no-no.

How about Westward Ho!
Skelmersdale.
Norwich.

Sunshineclouds11 · 22/10/2023 16:14

Rowan James is lovely
I also love Louis James

Myhusbandearns150k · 22/10/2023 16:14

I feel juvenile saying this but as someone else mentioned kids used to say Charlie Chester child molester and I don’t know why but it pops back in my mind.

all your other names are lovely.

lincolngirl1097 · 22/10/2023 16:16

Sounds like a cat - it's a no from me

Daphnis156 · 22/10/2023 16:32

Instead of Chester, why not Liverpool. It's quite nearby.

And please not Rowan.

feellikeanalien · 22/10/2023 16:38

Makes me think of Chester Thompson who is an excellent American drummer who plays with Genesis. Or the city, which as others have said is a great place for a weekend away with some lovely restaurants.

I don't hate it but I don't love it.

ShoesoftheWorld · 22/10/2023 16:39

Rowan James is lovely, really lovely. Oscar is fine as a name, but having a bit of a moment. Not keen on Ralph.

I really, really don't like Chester. Sorry. I would perhaps give it as a second middle name in your situation, with it being a family name.

ShoesoftheWorld · 22/10/2023 16:40

Martha and Chester also just don't 'fit' together at all, whereas Martha and Rowan really do.

Cegbee · 22/10/2023 17:00

Ok, consensus is no to Chester then. But perhaps marginally better than Jester 😂

We don't actually live in the UK anymore but I appreciate the issue there. Anthony and James and also family names and my husband doesn't like Rowan. Back to the drawing board! Why are boys names so hard?!

Glad that you crossed out Chester, it doesn’t sound appropriate as a name.
I like Anthony and James, nothing fancy but nothing wrong with them .

Cegbee · 22/10/2023 17:31

This is what he looks like!

Oh my! He looks perfect. He's an Oscar. Oscar Anthony.

UsingChangeofName · 22/10/2023 17:33

Aw. What a cutie.

Glad you've decided no to Chester.

Can you not use James, or Anthony ? As they would be preferred by me, over any of the other suggestions.

Not of course, that it matters what I think Grin

falalalalal · 22/10/2023 17:40

He's beautiful.

ShatteredPeace · 22/10/2023 17:41

Oh my he is gorgeous!

He looks like a James or an Anthony to me.

Big congratulations!

goodgriefsean · 22/10/2023 18:04

He's beautiful congratulations! I like James and Anthony better than all you first name options.
Oscar and Rowan seem a bit trendy at the moment and I'm not a fan of Ralph or Chester.
Chester is the best of the 4 if James and Anthony are off the table as first name.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 22/10/2023 18:20

What a perfect squidge! Congratulations and welcome to the world, Chester Jester Norwich TBC

ElleCapitaine · 22/10/2023 18:28

Ohh he’s perfect. James is lovely. Classic and not overly used. Some good nicknames too - Jamie, Jimmy, and Jim!

HoHoHoliday · 22/10/2023 19:13

I just cannot like Chester as a name, it feels a bit try-hard, a z-list celebrity name. I'm also aware of the Uncle Chester nickname that someone upthread mentioned.
I was going to say I love Oscar the most from your list, but when I saw the photo I thought he just looks like a little Ralph!
He's gorgeous!

Cegbee · 22/10/2023 19:54

Thank you! I think he looks like a Ralph too, which was always my first choice for our first baby if she had been a boy. So I think we might go with that. Thanks all for confirming my feelings about Chester though!

Ralph is lovely. Congratulations.

badgerfoxy1 · 22/10/2023 23:36

I know several ponies called Chester so its a pony name for me!
He is adorable! Ralph or Ralphie

Daisybuttercup12345 · 23/10/2023 17:42

Rowan James or James Chester.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 23/10/2023 19:43

Chester is lovely but I've always had a soft spot for Ralph.

xyz111 · 23/10/2023 19:51

I like Chester. Makes me think of Linkin Park.
