Barry or Bernard?

DS4 and I'm thinking Barry or Bernard. I already have Dennis, Doreen and Benedict.
I like unusual old fashioned names.

If you genuinely don’t give two hoots what people think then go ahead and call a child Barry (truly fucking awful name) or Bernard (Ever so slightly less awful, Bernie is cute). But in my opinion it’s cruel, you’ve got a lovely newborn little boy and you call him Barry? People will be aghast and talk about you behind your back, I know that sounds harsh but it’s true. The Health Visitors will gossip and say ‘I had a Barry in this morning!’ Mums in the park will go home and tell their husbands ‘there was a two year old little boy called bloody Barry today’.

But like I said, if that doesn’t bother you, go ahead, I admire your confidence. A name like Barry defers from old fashioned names like Arthur, George, Edward etc because at least they’re classic. Barry is dated, not classic. It would be like naming a newborn girl Maureen, Brenda or Eileen, they’re not classic, they’re just old fashioned and of a particular time.

They're not old fashioned though, they're only a few decades gone.

Barry is like the male equivalent of Tracey - popular in the 80's and thankfully not many these days!

I've just read that 9 poor kids were named Barry last year.

We used to have a dog officially called Barney, who we actually always called Barry - Barrold Barrington if we were feeling fancy. He was a VERY good boy indeed.

I still say go for it. A friend had a baby she named Roy, who is now 5 years old. Family at first were a bit horrified, but it suits him and has brought back a name that was popular in the 40's and 50's.

A lot of the B names have a strong consonant sound, therefore strong sounding name. And all the Barry singers were very popular in their day, they might look cheesy now.

I like Bernard. How about Barney or Barnaby?
