Regretting our name

Well we named our daughter Giuliana, but now I’m having name regret and don’t know how to shake it. Did I make a huge mistake?
is it hard to pronounce when first looking at it? Does it look weird? Maybe I should change it?

what do you think of this name?

I think it's beautiful. Both Guiliana and Elisaveta/Elisabetta are in my top ten favourite girls' names and I would have used one of these for DD if mine and DH's heritage wasn't so completely English/Welsh.

Its a pretty name. Gigi is the cutest nickname aswell. Ive always had to spell my name, its even rare for my native country and it's never really bothered me in the slightest. Good luck! x

I would not change the name and call her Guils or Gigi Marie or Gia Marie or Liana Marie - all so gorgeous.
I would also say to your Mum." I'm finding it sad that you don't like my daughter's name."
Your mother would be upset if she knew and I'm sure she likes the name a lot better by now.

We have used some nicknames so far sometimes GiGi, ju ju,
i don’t mind those or Lana, Anna, Lia,
hadn’t thought of Gia, but perhaps that could work too. She will definitely be spelling her name EVERY time.

Perhaps you are right and I should tell my mum how I feel about her negativity around the name and maybe it will change the way I feel ? I sure hope so

I like the name, one of my best friends was called Giuliana. She was always nicknamed Giuli and she was Italian.

It's a beautiful name! It's not hard to pronounce once you've been told. Please don't change her name.

My name is Welsh and I have to spell it out everytime. I really don't find it an issue at all - I'd much rather have a name that reflects my heritage than something which doesn't but is easier for people to spell. You can't predict how your DD will feel about her name when she's older but it's not a guarantee that she will object to spelling it out.

I'd agree that you should tell your mum to stop the negativity over your daughter's name. It's very thoughtless of her really and it seems to me that she needs to be told.

I still think it is a lovely name.

It's a lovely name , especially with your Italian connections. She won't be forever spelling it out as once people know, most of them will remember. She's not going to meet a horde of strangers every day.

You need to let your mum know that her negative comments have upset you. She probably doesn't realise and I'm guessing she wouldn't have wanted to upset you.

I knew someone her name is Giovanna but I knew as and she goes by Joanne. She was of Italian heritage so somewhere in the past she must have found that she prefers Joanne. So it can happen with any name really.

I know two Italian-heritage Guilianas (Juliana)

Just as I know two Polish-heritage Julias (Yulia)

In both cases, one is my age (old) the other is a toddler!

And both fabulous names

No, they spell it the Italian way.

Giuliana is a lovely name. I used to work with one whose nickname was GiuGiu (JooJoo) and she was really vibrant and sparky! So I'd say go for it.

But Guiliana is NOT the italian way, Giuliana is.
Guiliana would be pronounced Gweeliana

it is one of my favourite names, and so many lovely options for shortening it as well. When we told everyone my son's name my grandmother (bossy at the best of times) announced that she would not be calling him that - somehow I found my inner tiger mum and said well it's his name you can choose between the full version and the short one (neither of them particularly out there) and stood up to her.

I would assume Juliana is an anglicised Giuliana ? Like Neve is to Niamh. Happy to be corrected but not everyone is going to struggle with Giuliana.

Gia is also such a pretty nickname.

I'm sorry you have PPD( I did too) and I think your DM negative comments have coloured your view. Everything feels wrong with depression.
Your Mum shouldn't have voiced her opinions especially as you were having doubts
I think you should stick with it, and use Gia until she becomes her name( which she will)
You have plenty of time if you do decide to change it, so try not to put pressure on yourself

I think it's lovely, and I like the classical spelling! So many possible nicknames for this one, too.

Ultimately it will be up to how you feel, but I wouldn't want to let someone else's (besides the other parent) dislike change my decision.

Why would you change it from such a beautiful name to one of the most boring names on the planet, Joanne. Ugh.

Pretty name. I would go with Gia as suggested and keep that as her formal name.
