Thoughts on Matthew for DS ? It doesn't seem to be too popular at the moment but I think it would sound very fresh on a little boy.

I love Matthew it's not very common today where I live. George or James would both be good middle names.

My three month old DS is called Matthew. We love it because it’s a well known name but not too popular. I go to a few baby groups with him and haven’t come across any other Matthew’s. I think it’s a lovely name and have no regrets about using it.

PurpleChrayne · 23/09/2023 22:23

Dreadful.

"Matt" 🤢

FraterculaArctica · 23/09/2023 22:28

DS1 age 9 is Matthew. Hasn't yet got Matt (which I don't really like but find more acceptable than some of the shortenings of similar classic names - Steve, Nick, Tom, Ben). There is another Matthew in his class though, surprising for what is now a relatively uncommon name!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/09/2023 22:31

I have a Matthew who is 17. He loves his name. I love it too, although I wasn't sure when we chose it) It's a classic, strong, timeless name. We tend to call him by his full name, or if we're feeling lazy, "Math" 😄Never Matt, although I think some of his friends might call him that. He's happy with the full Matthew though.

MartyFunkhouser · 23/09/2023 22:35

I love it. I went to primary with several Matthews, and now have 3 friends and a nephew called Matt.

Yet I don’t think it’s ever become dated; it’s just a great name.

SquigglePigs · 23/09/2023 22:37

I really like it. We get it on our short list if DD had been a DS.

I prefer Matthew James as I think it does slightly better but George sounds fine too.

RogueFemale · 23/09/2023 23:03

It'll only ever be Matt. Which isn't a particularly interesting name.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/09/2023 00:31

I love Matthew. My favourite name x

timtam23 · 24/09/2023 00:45

I know a teenage Matthew. I don't think anyone calls him Matt. I also know several Matthews aged between 35 and 65 so it's definitely a classic name that won't date. But not used so often these days, not sure why as I think it's a lovely name

Waxlyrically · 24/09/2023 09:21

I have a grown up Matthew. He has always by choice been known as Matty which I also love ( biased though!)

Legobuilding · 24/09/2023 12:47

Thank you all for the lovely comments 😊
Do you prefer Matthew George or Matthew James ?

Matthew James

RomaniIteDomum · 24/09/2023 15:39

Matthew George is lovely but either works.

DS has a name with a similar vibe (classic but last popular in the 80s) and we get so many compliments on it

moonlike · 24/09/2023 15:44

I've never liked that sound of Matthew but absolutely love Matt

Wolvesart · 24/09/2023 15:51

It’s a nice name, our nephew - mid 20s is a Matthew/Matt - and I’ve always liked it. Overdue for coming back into fashion

aintnospringchicken · 24/09/2023 15:58

I love the name Matthew although I'm very biased. My Matthew is now in his late 20s and his girlfriend and friends all call him Matt.

bertiesgal · 24/09/2023 15:59

Our eldest boy is Matthew and I love it more with very passing year. He goes by Matty/ Matt/ matts/ matta etc. He is 10 and there are two other Matthews in his class at school. I think it’s a simple classic name open to lots of abbreviations so suits every stage of life. I’m hideously biased of course but I still get a little flutter of pride in my chest when I say his name. I’ve also never met a horrible Matthew. Must all have great parents with good taste 😉🤣.

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/09/2023 16:03

Lovely classic name - one of my faves.
