Hannah, Natalie, Hailey, Nina, Gemma, Bianca, Eva, Jenna, Lara, Jessica

So I’ve narrowed down my very long list to this top 10. I would like to hear your personal impressions on these names and which ones should be crossed off of the list and reasons why. Are these names classic? I’m really indecisive about names and I’d really appreciate your opinions. I would like the get to a solid top 5 or 3 after reading these comments. So tell me which ones are your favorite and which ones not so much. - OP

To me, your names are all very 90s. These were almost all very common when I went to school, and since this is the generation of parents currently having kids, they still fall into the "dated" category. They will probably become "classic" when the next generation start having kids.

The exceptions are Eva - which wasn't common then but was very common 10 years ago - Nina, Lara/Clara and Jenna. Hazel, too, but personally I'm not keen on that one.

Classic: Hannah - it's a biblical name
Natalie - not sure, might be in France for a Christmas baby
Hailey - looks like a surname
Nina - might have been a shortening of a long name
Lara - classic Russian name
Eva - might be classic in Germany
Gemma - not classic
Bianca - italian for white
Jenna - not classic
Jessica - classic

Riverlee · 06/09/2023 12:02

Hannah - like, due a revival
Natalie - not keen, only because it has gnat at the beginning
Hailey - love, but using the Hayley spelling, Hallie or Harper as alternatives?
Gemma - sometimes I like this, sometimes I don’t Bianca - nice nice, but people will think of Eastenders but that link will fade over time
Eva - very popular
Jenna - okay, Jennifer as alternative?
Lara - not keen, prefer Tara
Jessica. - quite good name
Nina - not to my taste but perfectly okay name

Similar vibe names include
Louisa
Harriet
Natasha
Suzannah
Penelope

It’s a good list of names. They’re not over- popular, but not weird either. They’re the sort of names that i would think that I hadn’t heard many recently, but they’re lovely names.

@ShoesoftheWorld I’m glad you really like Clara. It’s actually a name I just recently considered after the English singer Clara La San who makes lovely ethereal music. Highly recommend! “in this darkness” is a wonderful song.

About to listen to Clara La san on your recommendation.

Jenna or Nina

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/09/2023 13:38

Hannah - I really like Hannah

Natalie - it's OK, seems a little dated as I went to school with quite a few. It's not awful though

Hailey - not a fan

Nina - its ok

Gemma - really dont like, again i went to school with quite a few but unlike Natalie it also gives off a downmarket feel to me

Bianca - ok

Eva - first thought is 'not another Eva'

Jenna - love it

Lara - I really like Lara alot but L names on girls seem ten a penny atm even if Lara isn't one of them

Jessica - I like it alot and like Jess, but dislike Jessie

Theoldwoman · 06/09/2023 14:23

Eva and Nina are my favourites!

The rest are equally okay except not a fan of Gemma or Jenna.

crumblylancs · 06/09/2023 15:11

I pretty much agree with other comments about the names being 80/90's vibes (apart from a few) another name which I think is similar but more classic is Emily

OopsieeDaisy · 06/09/2023 15:57

I really like Jessica, Hannah and Lara. I don’t find them dated personally. I also quite like Nina. Really not keen on Hazel, Gemma or Bianca.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 06/09/2023 16:11

Eva and Hannah are my faves. The others found a bit too love island to me

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/09/2023 16:25

Nina.

Hazelnut9 · 06/09/2023 16:58

Clara is lovely.
I also think Jessica is a really pretty name.
Hannah, Nina and Lara are quite nice
Hazel, Hailey/Hayley, Natalie, Gemma, Bianca, and Jenna are bottom of the list for me.
Eva is nice but there’s a lot of Evie’s etc at the moment.

shoopshoopdedoo · 06/09/2023 17:49

Nina would definitely be my pick, followed by Lara.

From the rest, I also like Hannah, Eva, Jessica and Clara. Natalie and Hazel are OK. I don’t like Bianca, Gemma or Jenna.

BillAndBullseye · 06/09/2023 18:00

Absolutely love Nina

cptartapp · 06/09/2023 18:02

Natalie- my favourite ever girls name.
Hannah - dull
Hailey - dated
Nina- no
Gemma- dated
Bianca- God no
Eva- done to death
Jenna- no
Lara- ok. Prefer Cara
Jessica- ok. A bit 90's

CurlewKate · 06/09/2023 18:06

Hannah, Nina or Jessica.

ReadtheReviews · 06/09/2023 18:07

My associations with those names are:

Hannah - sensible, woolly cardigans, books,
Natalie - charismatic, intelligent, dancer
Hailey - shallow, outdoorsy, confident,
Nina - musical, petite, aloof
Gemma - not clever, friendly, loud
Bianca - graceful, interesting, feminine
Eva - glasses, grumpy, plain
Jenna - American, horsey, wholesome
Lara - beautiful, hard-working, unusual
Jessica- lovely hair, popular, very normal

Some are from people I know, some from cultural refs.

Natalie is my favourite. I love Bianca but you'd have to be a certain type to make it work.

ReadtheReviews · 06/09/2023 18:10

Clara is nice, Hazel sounds like a plump scullery maid.

Amwondering69 · 06/09/2023 18:14

Lara and Nina are my favourite names . All the other names very dated .

dressedforcomfort · 06/09/2023 18:37

Lara is my absolute stand out fav by a mile. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce. Classy and beautiful.

Also like Natalie very much.

Hannah and Jessica safe choices, but overused, possibly a bit dull.

Not keen on any of the others. (Cannot see the name Bianca without hearing "Rickaaaaaaaay!")

neverenoughwine · 06/09/2023 19:16

By a long mile I'd choose Nina. 🥰

It's genuinely a strong name for a girl of any age and I don't think you'll come across many!

The others are pretty 80s and sadly I can't say I'm in love with any of them!

KayEmAy · 06/09/2023 21:58

First of all, great list! So many gems :)

Personal order of preference -

  1. Hailey - I just love this name, easy to say in different languages, and while newer, I think it is still more classic than trendy, it's a modern classic lol
  2. Bianca - I think it is underrated, strong and pretty at the same time. It's one that sometimes slips my mind and then I meet someone or read it and am reminded, "oh I love that name"
  3. Lara - another international gem, I love this name at any age
  4. Natalie - I only have positive associations with this name, and I like the way it flows off the tongue
  5. Gemma - a name I like whole as much as the nicknames
  6. Jenna - Really like this name, I think it's classic for a reason. Only lower because I prefer Jenny and Jennifer
  7. Jessica - objectively I think it's a beautiful name, I think just being an American 90s child I'm just Jessica-ed out lol
  8. Eva - perfectly lovely name, though strangely Eve would be at the top
  9. Hannah - again, very pretty name, I just like the others more
  10. Nina - sweet but plain, it just feels meh to me

I realize this post is to narrow down your list, but just in case they hadn't already been crossed off, other names I think fit this list seamlessly - Belle, Whitney, Mia, Phoebe, Eden, Stella, Caroline, Aria, Thea, Grace, Nora, Lena
