Hi Girls,

Thought I would distract myself from worrying about the small size of my Bump until I see the midwife tomorrow by asking you your thoughts on these options...

We don't know the sex, so it's Kinder Surprise Also we have a seriously weird 3 syllable surname that starts with T. So we're going for short, punchy names with a max of 2 syllables:

Boy:

Dexter
Fillan
Rowan
Tate

Girl:

Faye
Hazel
Cara
Rose

Carmenere · 02/03/2008 09:42

I like all of them, a mn first for me

belgo · 02/03/2008 09:43

Not keen on any of the boy's names, sorry.

Faye and Hazel are fine, but I don't like Rose or Cara because like many people, I can't pronounce my 'r's very well.

MrsBadger · 02/03/2008 09:49

Girls ones are lovely

I would think carefully about Fillan as he'd always have to spell first name and surname
also about how Dexter fits with the surname (Dexter-ter-ter-ter-Tumbleweed)
and whether Tate Tumbleweed is too alliterative.

OverMyDeadBody · 02/03/2008 09:53

Dexter and Tate I like, but as MrsBadger said, if your surname starts with T Dexter may not work.

Hazel and Rose I like.

Nancy66 · 02/03/2008 10:00

I don't like hardly any of them i'm afraid.
The boy's names are all a bit 'surnamey'

From the girls I like Rose only - I think the others are a bit common especially Faye and Cara.

colander · 02/03/2008 10:03

2 Cara's in DD1s class, but I like the name. Prefer Rowan as a girl's name, not keen on any of your other boys names (sorry, but you did ask) and neither loving nor hating the girls names.

OneHandedTypist · 02/03/2008 10:03

Dexter is name of that serial killer & a strange animation programme, would rule that one out.
I had a small bump, turned into a nrly 9 lb baby at birth.

collision · 02/03/2008 10:04

Don't like any of them.

Fillan....?? where does that come from?

He really would be spelling his name constantly and from the sound of it with a 3 syllabled surname, it would take hours!

If your surname is a bit unusual maybe you need to find a less unusual first name.

Luke
Ben
James
Max

Ruby
Grace
Leah
Elyse

MrsBadger · 02/03/2008 10:09

Elyse is 'not unusual'?

James is superb though

(I had a small bump too - in fact I was on MN whining about it two days before dd (8lb3) was born...)

collision · 02/03/2008 10:11

Sorry Mrs B!

Was thinking of children in Ds's class! and thinking that Grace and Ruby are quite popular so came up with something different.

MrsMattie · 02/03/2008 10:13

Dexter - Yuk
Fillan - eh?
Rowan - one of my worst boy's names ever, sorry!
Tate - NOOOoooooo

Faye - don't like it
Hazel - quite sweet
Cara - don't like it
Rose - lovely

collision · 02/03/2008 10:16

LOL Mrs Mattie!!

say what you think!!

My worst boys' name ever is and I apologise to those with Camerons!

OneHandedTypist · 02/03/2008 10:23

I looked at the june08 antnatal thread, BB.
It sounds like placenta abrupture caused the problems u had in 1st pregnancy, not something likely 2 repeat, is it?
So no reason 2 expect iugr this time, is there?.

Think about Sophie (Prince Edward's wife). She had placenta abrupture too, didn't she, with Alice, in 2003. But then the baby she had next was born fine (James, Dec 07.

If it makes u feel better, I measured 1cm below weeks all of my last pregnancy, except the last 2 months when I became 4 cm too small. But baby was so active, I reckoned he had to be fine (scan confirmed that at 37 weeks).

collision · 02/03/2008 10:24

wrong thread onehandedtypist!!!! LOL!

MrsMattie · 02/03/2008 10:25

I always do!

itsahardknocklife · 02/03/2008 10:25

I agree with Mrs Mattie. The boys names are all a bid odd - it sounds like you are trying to be different, and with a long, unusual surname, I don't think they would work. I would go for something simpler.

collision · 02/03/2008 10:25

oh sorry....were you talking about size of baby and not names!! lol

brimfull · 02/03/2008 10:29

like all the girls names, not keen on the boys

Troutpout · 02/03/2008 10:32

i like Rose
Not so keen on any of the others...sorry.
I think of Rowan as a girls name.
how about

Ruth
Anna
Jane

and:
John

errm and there i dry up for short punchy names
It's hard this name business isn't it.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 02/03/2008 10:35

Jon

VictorianSqualor · 02/03/2008 10:46

I like Rose and Hazel.
Not keen on the others.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/03/2008 10:54

Not mad on any of the boys.

Like all the girls except Faye, which isn't dreadful, just a bit meh.

basilbrush · 02/03/2008 17:31

Thanks for all your thoughts

As ever, it seems the boys' are more controversial.

I am looking for something a bit more unusual but not TOO weird (i.e. not in top 20 or 30 names for UK) . I think we managed this difficult balance with DS but it's hard to do again. Thought about Theo but DS name starts with an F and it's hard to say their names together : F......and Th......

DH isn't being much help, his only (comic) suggestions so far have been Ace and Jafar

DS middle name is John so that's out. I have to admit Dexter is so far my favourite as it could be shortened to Dex and sounds quite feisty. If he's going to be a midgit like his brother (still in 12 month clothes and just turned 2!) he needs a gnarly name, right

Here's a TOTALLY FAR OUT ONE no-one's ever heard of just to really freak you all. In fact if you Google it, there only seems one other guy on the planet with this name and he makes vases in New Zealand:

Merric (Old English - ruler of the sea)

[other mums start throwing heavy, inanimate objects at Basil anbd threatening to call Social Services]

Come on then, suggestions for less weird names that aren't Jack, Josh, Oliver etc??

onehandtypist thanks for your advice
