I’m looking for names that walk that are easily accessible and pronounceable for life in the UK and aren’t incredibly ‘in your face Muslim’ (I know that’s problematic but discrimination is fairly common and people do struggle with some uncommon names, like abdur rahman)

boy and girl names please :)

big families on both sides so most of the names we like are taken

I am from a Muslim family… these are names of children in the family (all living in the UK)

  • Leila
  • Lina
  • Hilal
  • Sami
  • Sanah
  • Yazmin
  • Aryan

these names are from cousins etc who were all born in the UK and are or have gone through the school system. I think they are all fairly easy to pronounce?

Not keen on Alara and other names with repetitive sounds like Amaya and Anaya. They're samey and don't sound great if you say the name repeatedly.

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2023 06:08

Yasmin is pretty

Only names I wouldn't be keen on would Anas (anus), Rima (rimming) Aryan (Hitler connotations)

JimnJoyce · 24/08/2023 10:11

I had the exact same question before DD was born.

Faris is the boys name I chose

rima is pronounced Reema though, I think it’s pretty but I don’t think it’s one i would chose

I don’t think Aryan is a Muslim name?

Aryan (or Arian) is definitely Muslim and used in Afghanistan

You’re right just found it on my fave name website
it says

‘Aryan Is is NOT a Quranic name, but Muslims can use it since it has a good or neutral meaning.
Meaning of AryanAryan is a Kurdish, Persian and Urdu name for boys and girls that means “member of the Arya people”. Aryaitself is a word that in Sanskrit, Avestan and Old Persian means “noble”, “excellent”, therefore Aryan means “one who belongs to the noble people”. Arya is the word that the people of ancient greater Persia used to call their own race, and therefore Aryan also means “one who is from Persia”. Ancient Persia includes today’s Iraq, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan’

that being said probably wouldn’t use it myself given the connotations with Hitler
