I’m looking for names that walk that are easily accessible and pronounceable for life in the UK and aren’t incredibly ‘in your face Muslim’ (I know that’s problematic but discrimination is fairly common and people do struggle with some uncommon names, like abdur rahman)

boy and girl names please :)

big families on both sides so most of the names we like are taken

Dh loves that name but I worry it would be read as a bit ‘chavvy’

The (non-Muslim) Sammy I know is at private school with doctors for parents, if you are worried what about Sam/Sem. We even considered Jadon for our dc and we definitely aren’t chavs (dh is a surgeon) - if you have a clearly foreign surname like us you could call your dc Pineapple and British people would assume that it was native to your home country!

I've only heard Aryan for Hindu names, but I'm not a religious expert. One person once said to me to go for a name that has an Islamic value. I see loads of Amelia's now. A few years back, that would be seen as 'not a Muslim name'.

I love hiba for a girl, and laith for a boy. Maythem/Maithem is nice too.

If you know that good connotation makes a name suitable for a Muslim then are you asking for only Middle Eastern names?

Opine · 26/08/2023 00:14

Also, many Hebrew names cross over with a simple letter change. Yousef & yosef for example. Either one is suitable for a Muslim to use.

A friend had a Sam, full name Samir - if you like Sam/Sammy would that work?

Which naming convention are you using, my friend's children had their own name then their father's name as a middle name and then their grandfather's name.

If you are doing that you are more limmited but if you are going the usual UK nameing of first, middle and surname then you have more options. So a very muslim middle name and a less muslim first name.

A modern English Bible has names that appear in the Torah and Quoran but anglisized, would you consider one of those? So Joseph rather than Yousef? Sorry if that is something culturally insensitive, I don't mean it to be.

Something like Maryam that could be shortened to Mary?

Off the top of my head Kasim, Samin, Saffa are friends names I’ve liked the sound of over the years. Nobody has had trouble pronouncing but if you wanted something that blends well anywhere, Samin can be nicknamed to Sam. I know a Sarfaz nicknamed Saf.

No because Middle Eastern names could also included arab Christian names, discouraged names (binyamin) and haram names of Arabic origin.

generally speaking names with a good or neutral names are fine to use but it is preferable to give your child an Islamic name. I’d prefer to give my child a name with an Islamic meaning that’s easily pronounced.

we just have a first name and last name, family name seems to have been dropped when dh family first came to the UK (no idea why or how)

I’m not actually sure what the ruling is on say or joseph instead of yusuf or Noah instead of Nuh (I think it’s fine but It’s not something im too comfortable with)

i was going to call my eldest Mariam but I didn’t end up liking how people pronounced it like Murium,so chose another name lol.

not insensitive at all btw 🥰

Discouraged according to who? I don’t think Binyamin was a prophet but no reason why other prophet names are discouraged. They are still Islamic prophets and names.

The Islamic consensus is that there are certain names that are haram, and certain names that are discouraged and disliked.

so names like binyameen or matta (arab Christian equivalent of matthew) these are marked as distinctly Jewish or Christian names so it’s not permissible. Binyameen isn’t an Islamic name. Like wise is a name like Christopher, abdul messi. There are other Arabic names that are prohibited like Majeed or anything that denotes one of Allah’s characteristics so like Rahman, so you can’t call your child that unless you have abdur’rahman. Then there’s a difference of opinion about naming after Angels, so names like Mikail and Jibreel, or names like Malik and Maliaka. Here I err on the side of caution and wouldn’t use them

for more info on binyameen, I’ll post a fatwa below
