We chose to name our son Aladdin.
Ala ad din but we wanted something unique to us and opted for Aladdin . We thought it was cute and We both loved this variation .
Dhs mother refuses to call him this " after a disney character" and it telling people we called him Alan. His name is not Alan.
I've had people send congratulations messages to me , hubby and saying how Alan is beautiful. Its really annoying me now

Is it pronounced like the Disney character or ‘allah-din’?

Ali could work as an every day name?

How common is it in the UK for Muslims? I'd have thought the connotations would be too off-putting.

Moonwatcher1234 · 22/08/2023 20:47

Exactly - I think some people need to broaden their horizons and minds a bit.

selphie · 22/08/2023 21:00

I've never in my life heard of a British Muslim called Aladdin. It might be common in some other parts of the world; I don't know. But most Muslims or Arabs in the UK probably wouldn't use it because of the Disneyfied and stereotypical connotations.

MissKH84 · 22/08/2023 14:29

Do you really think this would be much associated with the Disney character?
We felt like Ala ad din just wasn't fitting so removed the extra A so changed it to Aladdin.
His middle name is Imad.
Is this really that bad ? I didn't think it would get so much hate from family

How about Alauddin/ Alawuddin ? Means nobility of faith. Presume you are muslim with Imad as a middle name.

I met a Jafar today!!! What a crazy coincidence to stumble upon this thread!
I'd take a guess he was of Arabic/middle -eastern/Muslim heritage (had surname to go on too). The film was out in 1992. I'd guess he was born a little after it, but maybe he just looked young. I thought it was a fabulous name. I clocked it as a name from Aladdin, but didn't think negatively of it at all. Makes a nice change from pedestrian names (sorry to all Alans).

My own name (see username) was inspired by a Disney film. Obviously it is a more uk-mainstream kind of name, and maybe you'd have to be an Aristocats nerd to notice the reference, plus it's biblical, but if Aladdin or the various spellings has a history in its relevant religious or heritage documents, then it's no different.

OP, I like it.

Alan is darling .. and he is a new star of Barbie.

ZickZack · 23/08/2023 06:44

I hope this isn't real... But if it is, do your child the favour of changing his name to Oliver Jack like originally planned 🙈

We had similar. Called our DS Widow Twankey but MIL insists on calling him Brian.

🤣

Scirocco · 30/08/2023 14:32

Ala-ad-din and the more widely recognised Aladdin aren't that unusual in some cultures and areas. Unfortunately, multicultural names which have strong associations in English culture can get quite negative views both on here and in real life.

Personally, I prefer Aladdin to Alan.
