We chose to name our son Aladdin.
Ala ad din but we wanted something unique to us and opted for Aladdin . We thought it was cute and We both loved this variation .
Dhs mother refuses to call him this " after a disney character" and it telling people we called him Alan. His name is not Alan.
I've had people send congratulations messages to me , hubby and saying how Alan is beautiful. Its really annoying me now

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea obviously we have heard of Aladdin but we didn't think anything of the Disney association. That's not why his name is Aladdin. It has absolutely nothing to do with our choice. His name was going to Ala ad din but we didnt like the spaces and Alaaddin didn't look right .
His name is Aladdin Imad

You sound immature.

MoonlightDreamer · 22/08/2023 14:47

Aladdin Imad at you , go to your room.

Soubriquet · 22/08/2023 14:48

Sorry OP. Are you in the UK? Cos everyone is going to know Aladdin and the poor kid is gonna get the piss taken out of him

One is a fictional child’s character and the other is a 70 year old retired builder.

😂😂😂

TeamTea · 22/08/2023 14:49

If you’re in an English speaking country then Aladdin is only associated with the Disney character. At least it’s not Jafar

maybebalancing · 22/08/2023 14:51

Imagine if someone had actually done this.
It would be funny for everyone except the child.

Jojobees · 22/08/2023 14:51

Addin works. You can change it. Please change it. Your poor child should not be saddled with a Disney characters name.

ReeseWitherfork · 22/08/2023 14:52

I don’t see anything wrong with this. I’ve got twins called Lilo and Stitch and no one associates it with Disney.

(Sorry, unhelpful joke, but yes everyone in the UK is going to immediately think of Disney.)

FayCarew · 22/08/2023 14:52

It's from 1001 Nights. It's ok, but probably ranking along with names like Cinderella and Bambi in the western world.

eddiemairswife · 22/08/2023 14:53

The name has been around a lot longer than the Disney film .

EverybodyLTB · 22/08/2023 14:53

I’m really tired and jet lagged and this has sent me a bit hysterical wtf 😂

SleepyRooster · 22/08/2023 14:54

I used to know a grown man with this name. He was from an east Mediterranean nation. After a while you think nothing of it, it's just a person's name

ScottBakula · 22/08/2023 14:54

You keep writing his name as Ala ad din, so would you pronounce it as three separate names ? Could you just use the 1st part or combine 1st and 2nd parts pronounce Alad ? Though to be fair I am not sure either is a improvement

mosiacmaker · 22/08/2023 14:57

Honestly I think Aladdin is worth a come back! It is actually a great name. Lots of girls are called Aurora and Bella and they are also Disney name and no one cares… feel like people here are just being a bit culturally insensitive tbh. Aladdin means nobility of faith and has been used since 1149 (thanks Wikipedia)

Neverseenbefore · 22/08/2023 14:58

Soubriquet · 22/08/2023 14:33

Yup. Aladdin really is that bad. It’s a Disney Prince name…

It’s an ancient name from the 12th century, used by many people. The story Aladdin is a folk tale from Thousand and One Nights, compiled in the 18th century.

quietnightmare · 22/08/2023 14:59

Well atleast naming a daughter won't be difficult..... little Alladin and baby Jasmine

HelpMeGetThrough · 22/08/2023 15:01

This thread is going to turn into a right pantomime.

dooneyousmugelf · 22/08/2023 15:08

Depends on your culture or heritage I suppose. Jesus is a very common name in some parts of the world but your average MNer wouldn't suggest as a serious consideration.

However. If your MIL is going round insisting on 'Alan' then I'm going to join the rest and say you're taking us all for a magic carpet ride here

That is a correct spelling of it - there are a few variations.

Cowlover89 · 22/08/2023 15:09

Oh god please don't 🤦‍♀️

user341289127 · 22/08/2023 15:11

Not sure if it’s a windup.. but

Ala-ad-din is technically incorrect as an Arabic name as it should be Ala-ud-din. ad-din is normally added after a name ending with a consonant. I have met several alauddins as well - Aladdin is just an anglicisation of the word. I don’t know Arabic but have lived in a country with lots of Alauddins. There is also a famous Persian conqueror called Alauddin Khilji.

TomatoSandwiches · 22/08/2023 15:12

Ask her to call him Ali, that's fine as a nickname for Aladdin.

HelpMeGetThrough · 22/08/2023 15:18

Wish we'd named one of our sons God now, just to see what the Rev thought at the Christening.
