Celeste or Summer ??

Hi all, My husband and I are struggling with naming our new little baby girl (5 days old). We like Celeste and Summer. What’s your thoughts on these names? We would have the favourite as first name and the other as middle name. So, either ‘Celeste Summer’ or ‘Summer Celeste’. Any thoughts really welcome. Any warnings about why these names might not work. Please be brutally honest! Also, any nicknames for either one as I’d like to use a cute nickname but can’t think of any for these names. Thank you for your thoughts!

We can see this thread is quite old now but if you’ve landed here looking for baby naming inspo, our recently updated cute girl names offers lots of ideas, which you may find useful. Flowers

I’m afraid I’m not keen on either. Celeste seems a bit pretentious, whereas Summer is sort of the opposite. Of the two, I’d pick Celeste as I don’t mind CeCe or Ellie as nicknames.

Neverseenbefore · 22/08/2023 21:25

I don’t like either and I don’t think they work well as first/middle name combinations. Celeste at a push.

GoodVibesHere · 22/08/2023 21:41

I quite like Summer but it doesnt go with Celeste, as it sounds like Summer Solstice.

DemBonesDemBones · 22/08/2023 22:40

Celeste

continentallentil · 22/08/2023 22:43

Celeste

Summer was hippyish for a minute and then went distinctly downhill

Or Cecile is very nice too

ImNotAMermaid · 23/08/2023 00:13

Celeste 100% Summer is a chavvy name in my area

salamithumbs · 23/08/2023 01:02

Celeste!

Squirrelsnut · 23/08/2023 01:07

Celeste is nicer than Summer.
Have you considered Cecily? Lucia also means light.
(Please don't 'plan' a nickname. They're meant to arise naturally, or not.)

I don't like the double SS sound.

Celestine Joy is gorgeous.
Cedella Autumn is lovely
Camille Summer is lovely
Ester Camille
Summer Camille
Summer Rosemarie

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2023 02:09

Celeste is beautiful.

Summer isn't exactly classy (sorry!) but OK as a middle name I suppose.

MajesticWhine · 23/08/2023 02:23

Celeste is better than summer.
How about Celine?

Georgie743 · 23/08/2023 02:34

Celeste is pretty and more classic
Summer is chavvy

Agree that they don't work well together - different styles of name and also too much of the same sound. Much more important though that first and last name work... middles are hardly used or known

newmumcrazytired · 23/08/2023 08:08

Wow - thank you so so much everyone for
your super helpful replies. You have all helped me so much. My husband liked Celeste and I liked Summer. I have been totally won over to Celeste now though!

I agree with many of you who said Celeste and Summer don’t work together well.

Since I’ve now fallen out of love with Summer…

Do you have any suggestions for a middle name for Celeste?

One reply suggested ‘Celeste Joy’ which is lovely. I’ve also thought of ‘Celeste Nova’ or ‘Celeste Noa’. What do you think of these? Do you have any other suggestions?

I think Celeste needs a soft middle name as our surname is single syllable and ends with a ‘t’ sound. It is an English sounding surname.

Thank you so much for any help with this too!

Congratulations OP! I was going to suggest Celeste Joy. I think that sounds beautiful! Or perhaps something like Celeste Chloe or Celeste Coco to lean into the CeCe nickname?

salamithumbs · 23/08/2023 15:31

If the surname is one syllable, I'd probably go for a slightly longer middle name, like:
Celeste Alina
Celeste Aurelia
Celeste Emilia
Celeste Isabel
Celeste Juniper
Celeste Madeleine
Celeste Rowena
Celeste Viola
Celeste Valentina

ammyy · 23/08/2023 15:41

I would also go for a longer middle
Celeste Cordelia
Celeste Henrietta
Celeste Marigold
Celeste Angelina
Celeste Veronica
Celeste Bianca
Celeste Paloma
Celeste Philomena
Celeste Fiona
Celeste Mariana
Celeste Ofelia
Celeste Wilhelmina
Celeste Ariana
Celeste Isabella

Celeste. Summer is a burlesque dancer.

Thank you so much everyone! Your help is very much appreciated. We went for Celeste Victoria in the end. I can’t imagine her with another name now 😀

I prefer Celeste - Summer is one of those names like Misty or Meadow or Willow that I actually think are pretty but...I wouldn't use them.

Oh good choice OP, I agree that a longer middle name goes better than something like Joy. I think you made a really good choice, love Celeste it reminds me of my childhood and Babar the elephants queen wife.

newmumcrazytired · 10/09/2023 09:02

Thank you! I’ve just bought a copy of Babar the Elephant book 😀

Celeste is lovely. Summer is not.

Agree.
