Lucy or Hazel

I'm torn between both of these names. Lucy because it's sweet, youthful, classic. Hazel because it's feminine but strong, classic but slightly uncommon (I accept that it might not stay uncommon), and nature inspired.

What do you think? Thanks

Lucy

Edellondon · 17/08/2023 22:17

Hazel is such a lovely name and not one I hear a lot. Lucy is cute but definitely popular at the moment, meet quite a few when we're out and about

Theoldwoman · 17/08/2023 22:24

Depends on surname, middle, siblings?

I love Lucille more than Lucy, but Lucy is a fine name.

Hazel is not my cup of tea.

MoonlightDreamer · 18/08/2023 15:06

Hazel. I dislike Lucy. Makes me think of a doll or a dog

BeaBannoffee · 18/08/2023 15:32

Both nice and perfectly acceptable names. I would be reluctant to use Lucy this year because I think given the guilty verdict in the Letby trial we will likely see a lot of TV, podcasts etc about her this year and the next. But that's just me. I actually like both names though.

Lucy

Mojodojocasahaus · 18/08/2023 21:51

Lucy always sounds like loo seat to me. Is it going to have negative connotations after today?

bluegreenandcoral · 18/08/2023 21:54

I love both names, but prefer Lucy.

I would feel a bit weird naming a baby Lucy at the moment though given the headlines 😔 But in a few weeks I’m sure that will start to fade.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 18/08/2023 21:57

Hazel doesn't sound nice to me said aloud, I seem to say it 'Hayzuwl' somehow. Lucy is a beautiful name and there are enough Lucy's about like Lucy Worsley that I don't think the court case will change anything, I won't think anything different of the several Lucy's I already know.

OopsieeDaisy · 19/08/2023 10:42

I agree with pps Hazel is a middle aged sounding name to me, much prefer Lucy!

Friggingfrog · 19/08/2023 10:43

Hazel. Lucy is very twee and right now probably not a good name to choose

continentallentil · 19/08/2023 19:33

I think they’re both quite popular now

Lucy is sweet but I don’t think I’d want to be called it as an adult, and I find Hazel quite harsh

Um, Zoe? Sorrel??

Marcipex · 20/08/2023 00:44

I think Lucy is going to drop out of the rankings. A shame but it’s a poisoned name for me.

Hazel is okay. Do you like Rowan, Willow, Autumn, Ashley, Holly, Laurel?

user1492757084 · 20/08/2023 07:15

Both are lovely names ..
Hazel Josephine
Lucy Joanna

AdoraLovesCake · 20/08/2023 09:28

I vaguely know a Lucy, Lucie and Lucia, all in their early 20s. I prefer Hazel

I think this is potentially accurate tbh. We might see a dip because of the Letby case. I'm not keen on the name personally anyway and Hazel is much nicer.

GLORIAGloriarse · 20/08/2023 09:44

Hazel

EsmerayUnutamaBeni · 20/08/2023 09:49

Came back to say Hazel doubly after the Letby verdict. Both fab names but now is not a time to call a newborn Lucy. The name is going to be plastered in the news with a baby killer associated for god knows how long.

Hmm, good point.
Not sure I’d want to call a baby Lucy right now.
I still don’t like Hazel, though.

GLORIAGloriarse · 20/08/2023 09:56

Yeah, to be honest the case put me off Lucy (as well as Hazel being very nice and autumnal which is such a beautiful season). If you're really drawn towards Lucy more then maybe spelt Lucie, or even Lucia? I'm sure it won't be a lasting association as it's such a classic name, just the timing.

LadyEloise1 · 20/08/2023 10:35

I don't like Hazel and Lucy Letby has tainted the name Lucy for me now.

myhusbandisarabbit · 20/08/2023 10:41

Lucy is out. Beautiful name, wrong timing.

I like Juliet DP hates it. We both like Laura but worry its boring given all of the popular girls names atm.

Juliet is lovely. Laura is nice too.

GLORIAGloriarse · 20/08/2023 10:59

Juliet! Nice. What about Harriet? Laura is rather lovely seen with fresh eyes (there were about 10 in my primary school in the 90s). No fuss, capable, classic but pretty.
