What's everyone's thoughts on the name Peggy. We like the vintage names trend

Makes me think of pegging 😬

Sorry!

ASoapImpressionOfHisWifeWhichHeAte · 11/08/2023 11:13

I liked this for DD2 but it didn't feel like a "proper" enough name on its own and we didn't like Margaret (not least because we might have been taken for Thatcher admirers). A shame because I think she could have rocked it, but it felt too nicknamey. Great name though.

continentallentil · 11/08/2023 11:24

I’d go for Marguerite as a full name

I don’t mind it but it’s quite marmite, so that gives her a choice

Giggorata · 11/08/2023 11:29

Unfortunately, nowadays we have some words which have acquired new meanings and I would worry that Peggy is too close to pegging.

What about one of the less Thatcher versions of Margaret, and call her Meggy?

bridgetreilly · 11/08/2023 12:51

I really don’t like Peggy. There are so many nicer vintage names.

Gladys
Muriel
Agnes
Polly
Maud

The vast majority of people, including mumsnetters, had never heard of ‘pegging’ until the gossip doing the rounds last year. I doubt it’s so widespread as to render the name Peggy effectively cancelled.
Look, some bewildered poster was plaintively asking what ‘Home Alone’, described in the post as the film, Home Alone, is. Don’t underestimate how things go right over the heads of great tranches of the population.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 11/08/2023 16:04

love love love it. I know three: two are little girls and one is an old broad. All fab.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 12/08/2023 17:14

Love it!!

People are entitled to opinions that don't coincide with YOURS you know. Doesn't make them ignorant FFS. Hmm What a narrow-minded post. Get a grip.

Topseyt123 · 12/08/2023 17:27

I don't like it. It makes me think of clothes pegs.

I've never really been sure how it ever came to be considered a shortened version of Margaret either. I just can't see any relationship.

TheaBrandt · 12/08/2023 17:27

Love it.

PurpleReindeer2 · 12/08/2023 17:40

Sorry OP but I really don't like Peggy.

Pontiouspilate · 12/08/2023 17:44

Makes me think of

  • sexual term pegging
  • Peggy mitchell
  • pregnant (preggers) 1940’s school girl
RedVanYellowVan · 12/08/2023 17:44

I love it. I know a delightful little Peggy although she is really a Margaret.

One of the Polish staff in my aunt's care home once asked me how Margaret became Peggy. There were three Peggy's at one point. I had to say I had no idea.

Pontiouspilate · 12/08/2023 17:47

I love your self-assured declaration that just because YOU had never heard of pegging, that most mumsnetters haven’t. Some people are literally self-centred. And I’ve no idea what gossip you’re talking about but pegging isn’t an unfamiliar sexual term.

User63847484848 · 12/08/2023 17:48

I prefer Maggie personally

JaninaDuszejko · 12/08/2023 17:52

The gossip is about the current PoW.

I adore Margaret (was my GMs name) and it's due a revival. Definitely have Margaret on the b.c. to keep options open. And I agree with the PP, my reference for the name is Swallows and Amazons (also love Ruth and Nancy for the same reason).

How is it ignorant to dislike the name Peggy?

I think it's an awful name but that doesn't make me ignorant. We all have different preferences. I prefer Maggie or Daisy as a nickname of Margaret.

Liv999 · 12/08/2023 18:00

Peggy is really terrible, if you must call her Margaret and give her the nickname Maggie, not great either but better than Peggy

blahblahblah1654 · 12/08/2023 18:01

Awful!

Oh, do give over. You are making a complete twit of yourself.

Pontiouspilate · 12/08/2023 18:08

How exactly I am doing that? Because I’ve disagreed with you?
