Artemis

What’s the Mumsnet view on Artemis? I love it, but it was met with an instant dismissal from my husband. Does the NASA Artemis project change your view on the name?

Athena could be an alternative if you like goddess names.

Or Hera?

KirstenBlest · 10/08/2023 19:49

Artemisia plant

Artemis

Artemis Fowl is the male protagonist in a series of children's books, if that makes any difference.

rainbowtea23 · 10/08/2023 19:54

My top girl name, currently expecting DS2 not sure if we’ll try for a third yet but if I did have a daughter this would be her name without a doubt. Absolutely love how strong it is.

minipie · 10/08/2023 19:54

I like it as a name but it does give a bit of a try-hard impression, to me. Bit like calling your child Persephone or Ptolemy.

BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox · 10/08/2023 19:55

Not keen. Artemisia has a better flow and seems more like an actual name, whereas Artemis just seems incomplete and abrupt.

KirstenBlest · 10/08/2023 20:06

The aftershave is Aramis.

LilyLemonade · 10/08/2023 20:12

Love it, very strong yet feminine. I'd immediately think of the Greek goddess of hunting, not NASA or Artemis Fowl.

Goldbar · 10/08/2023 20:13

Not fond of it personally.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/08/2023 20:13

I love Artemis! I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to use it though, but I think its really cool!

sparklefresh · 10/08/2023 20:13

Love it. Elegant and strong.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/08/2023 20:16

I used to work with an Artemis. She was Persian (living in the US). Strong name that really suited her. I like it. Better than the usual Emily or Sophie type names.

continentallentil · 10/08/2023 20:34

I love it

And know a fabulous one who is occasionally know as Artie

PickledScrump · 10/08/2023 21:07

I love it, knew a little Artemis and she went by Artie. Lovely girl, lovely name

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 11/08/2023 16:13

Artemis Fowl spoilt it for me.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 11/08/2023 17:09

Love it, especially with the nickname Misty. I did briefly consider it for a second DD but eventually came to the conclusion that it was too different to DD1's name which leans more simple and sensible.

wherethewaterisdarker · 11/08/2023 17:15

I love it (but I am a classicist). Not everyone will understand its meaning but I don’t think that matters as it’s a beautiful word on its own too.

TheGirlWhoLived · 11/08/2023 17:20

I love it, I would definitely choose it if I had another daughter.
Other names I liked with a similar vibe were Arietty, Arya, Antigone and Persephone

Artemisia plant

That is feverfew! It isn’t even the same plant family as Artemisia. Virtually all the artemisias have silvery or grey leaves ( I grow several) and tiny inconspicuous flowers. that’s why they were naked for the moon Goddess.

Artemisia is a key ingredient for absinthe. It used to be recommended as a moth repellent, as well.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/08/2023 17:27

Naked 😡naughty text. Named , of course.

since I’ve returned, I will say that feverfew is also very bitter and used to be recommended as a cure for headache.

Carouselfish · 11/08/2023 18:20

Love it. See also Athena, Atalanta.

HahahaBoomBoom · 11/08/2023 21:23

Love it!

HandScreen · 11/08/2023 21:32

I would say it is a boy's name, because of the famous Artemis Fowl book series.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 13/08/2023 23:11

I prefer Diana, or perhaps Selene / Selena.

KirstenBlest · 14/08/2023 11:23

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen , thanks. I bought it as 'wormwood' I think. We called it 'white wormwood' when I was growing up - I think it was a wild flower.
