What are the opinions on Brooks for a boy?

Other names on our shortlist are Miles and Beau.

It's a well known brand of bicycle saddle. It also sounds vaguely plural or possessive.

I was going to say this! A comfortable seat.

WaterBaby9 · 16/07/2023 20:27

My son has a Brooks in his class. I always thought it was a strong, cool sounding name, could imagine a CEO being called Brooks for some reason 😂 Beau always feels babyish to me. After the age of 9 it doesnt feel quite right. Miles is nice for all eras of life.

shoopshoopdedoo · 16/07/2023 21:17

Miles is my favourite by far.

I think Jude is OK, but a bit trendy. Not keen on Roman. Really dislike Beau.

I’ve never heard of Brooks, but I’m not sure I like it. It’s a bit American/surname-y for my taste.

CountFoscoHasMiceInHisPocket · 16/07/2023 21:25

Sounds very preppy. Brothers called Blaine and Bennett.

Possibly baddies in a Donna Tartt novel.

afrenchmum · 16/07/2023 22:03

@WaterBaby9 I’m glad you’re seeing my vision here 😂 I really love Brooks.

Looks like Miles is coming out on top!

Go with Miles

ThatFraggle · 16/07/2023 22:10

Beau is a silly 'rereading your 14-yr-old diary when-I-have-kids' names, with the girl name being Elladora

Elspethelf · 17/07/2023 04:25

I love Brooks, I also love Banks which is similar feeling. I am American though lol! I also like Miles but it’s too common for me, I’d go with Niles instead. I know adult Beaus and it’s fine

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 17/07/2023 04:55

Agree with pp, Brooks makes me think of the old man in Shawshank Redemption.
Never met a nice Beau.
Lots of Miles/Myles around. That and Roman are the Isla and Ayda of the boy name world.

Frogmila · 16/07/2023 09:27

Is there a reason for liking Brooks such as it being your maiden name or you're a huge fan of Garth?

No offence to any with the name but if not, it's just a bit of a boring surname with a simple geographical meaning. Not nice enough to justify the repeated 'no, it's Brooks with an 's''. Not the end of the world but I can't really see the appeal in and of itself.

Beau will date quickly and Miles is a bit wet but the best of the three.

Seriously?

I know a Brooks who was born in 1920.
His son Brooks was born in 1950.

@afrenchmumis looking for opinions, @Frogmilanot insults.
Wow

afrenchmum · 17/07/2023 09:18

@DreamTheMoors thank you for this. Are they English or American? I just think it’s a really strong name with a lovely sound, and I like the link to water.

Where's the insult? She asked for opinions, not only agreeable ones.

Elspethelf · 19/07/2023 07:05

Brooks is a beautiful name OP. Don’t let opinions here sway you, it’s same reason you hear advice all the time about not telling family until the baby arrives.

Brooks and Miles were both on my list because I liked the sound of short games that ended in S. Neither of these were my pick in the end, but I did go with another short name ending in S that is really uncommon and I have no regrets.

Have you watched Shawshank Redemption? Great film but the name reminds me of a character from that

That's my first thought too. Good movie though Grin

American. Brooks senior’s parents were from Sweden.
Dark hair, blue eyes. The daughter was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.
Congratulations on your baby.

Changethetoner · 21/07/2023 05:01

James is a good strong name ending in S.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/07/2023 10:10

There were Beaus when I was a child in the nineties so not a new name. It’s alright.

Brooks sounds a bit odd to me, feels like more of a surname.

Miles is nice

Belleandlou · 22/07/2023 14:45

Isn't Brooks a make of trainers? Miles is WAY better

ColonelPine · 22/07/2023 15:01

I do like Brooks and I see your vision for the name, but I think for me what would rule it out is that he would be constantly having to clarify that it’s not his surname and that it doesn’t have an E in it and yes it has an S on the end.

Came to post that - 'Brooks was here' 😪

Daisybuttercup12345 · 28/07/2023 17:57

Miles is by far the best.

MissDollyMix · 28/07/2023 18:10

It depends on your surname. Brooks …. Could sound a bit like a law firm.
Off your list I like Miles. Never been a big fan of Beau. Too loaded with expectation.

Well Donna Tartt did have a Bunny in The Secret History.

Brooks would be a nice middle name to Sparkling. Or Oxford?

Pinkitydrinkity · 29/07/2023 00:35

I like the name Brooks actually! I think I would assume it’s a family surname, not that it matters if it is or isn’t.

Jude or Roman would be my other two choices.

Fair point.

Roman I like. No need to have Polish heritage I don't think.
