What do you think of the name India-Mae?
Any similar names you can think of?

People will assume you are copying that ex-Love Island influencer. The hyphenated part has negative connotations. India is a beautiful name.

aSofaNearYou · 14/07/2023 11:33

They're both cringe names in different ways - Mae because it's so incredibly overdone as a hyphenated second name (less so as an actual first name I feel) and India due to the cultural appropriation argument.

I'm here I'm just not responding to all your rude messages. I didn't realise this website was full of nasty trolls

You asked for opinions didn't you?

Growuppeople · 14/07/2023 19:36

I’m calling my next daughter lily-mae after reading this 😂 funny how you all hate it yet there’s so many of them 🤦‍♀️

Well that's why people hate it isn't it, I thought it sounded nice the first time I heard it, but it's become a bit of a stereotype.

That will be a nice story for her:

"How do you choose my name, mummy?"

"To spite some MC women on the internet."

I'm sure she'll be touched.

Ontopofthesunset · 14/07/2023 19:53

The two names don't really fit together. I don't much like the name India as it seems odd to call a child after a whole huge country. Why India and not Turkiye or Namibia? And it seems very modern - it's only recently been used as a name. Whereas Mae (though I prefer the May spelling) is a traditional old-fashioned floral name. So Lily-Mae, though I don't much like hyphenated names, at least has two names in the same register.

“MC women” 😂

You want to be careful you don't give yourself a hernia @Growuppeople

Weird thing to say… but ok

Hyphenated first names is very chavvy in my experience

I think you have misunderstood what a troll is.

However, isn't the point of asking on here, to get a feel for what "people" actually think about a suggested name, rather than just asking people who will say something you want to hear, either through politeness, or because, to some extent, many of us live in an echo chamber of people who are similar to ourselves?

If you want people to say "That's nice" - then ask those in your circle that will do that.
If you are confident in your choice, just use it and don't ask.

As you have found out - asking on here will get you some honest answers.

Swansandcustard · 14/07/2023 21:39

Your babe, your choice hun xxx is that more what you were after

👹👹👹👹 don’t ask on MN if all you want is agreement. Giving an honest opinion doesn’t make someone a troll.

The name ‘Mae’ tagged onto names is a fad, will date and alludes to a certain demographic. India is a no for me because the Hopkins beast thing has an India.

RicherThanYews · 14/07/2023 21:52

I agree with a PP that India Faye is beautiful 😍

Who gives a fuck what any of us think op? You will likely never meet any of us in the world and even if you did, 99% of people are two faced enough to say nothing other than the requisite "What a lovely name, it suits her".

I really disagree with this and think it’s quite offensive to reduce a huge and interesting and beautiful country with such a long and vibrant history, to colonialism. It’s almost like saying there’s not much else to India but the short period in its vast history that it was a British colony.

Isn't there a push among Indian people to officially rename their country, as "India" was the name given by the British during colonial times? (Sorry if I have my facts wrong there, hope someone knowledgeable can say what Indian people think about the name India). Is this what previous posters mean when saying the name has colonial overtones?

I’m not Indian so can’t give my opinion on the name of the country but yes, in Hindi the country is called Bharat and there have been proposals to rename it in English too, like how various cities (Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru etc) have been renamed to get rid of anglicised names.
The colonial overtones of choosing it as a name with no connection to it imo is that usually it’s being chosen either as a collection of pleasant sounds, which ignores the long and difficult history of the country and word, or that it’s being chosen for sounding exotic, which is obviously problematic in its own way.

Ginger1982 · 14/07/2023 22:24

Awful, sorry.

Madamecastafiore · 14/07/2023 22:52

India is quite cool, if you're cool too I suppose but tagging Mae on the end if it, or anything for that matter just no, no hyphens at all please.

louderthan · 14/07/2023 22:56

Awful.

louderthan · 14/07/2023 22:59

Why India? I can think of lots of place names that would be more original.
Brussels
Dunkirque
Bronx
Malaysia

louderthan · 14/07/2023 22:59

Snugglemonkey · 14/07/2023 23:07
