If they are in the UK, I would ask what made them think of the name and I would want to make sure that they realise the most common associations here are with Scrooge and with the Shamen song referencing drug use, both of which might lead to teasing at school.

If they are anywhere on the planet more like.

Sherlock (Holmes) aside I can't think of a fictional character with a more famous first name globally than Ebenezer (Scrooge).

I know an birth certificate Ebeneezer who goes by Eben day to day. Although the Mum is often on FB rating about the pronunciation as often people say it to rhyme with Even.

He is going to be nicknamed "Eben".

from this, it does sound like there are actually a few Ebeneezers around.

Ben sounds like a good nick name

The baby is born and named, but the birth not registered yet... so if I am going to say anything it has to be more or less immediate. I'm paralysed with indecision! I was shocked, but tbh, it could be growing on me - or maybe the shock is just wearing off a bit

I wouldn't worry too much. I can't imagine there's a family in the land that won't have an Uncle Neil and/or a Granny Susan who won't exclaim on the family chat 'have you gone mad?'.

MmaRra · 13/07/2023 14:19

I would say something and quick. Then it is up to them.

Or does it fit in with the sibling or family names?

augustusglupe · 13/07/2023 14:22

Ebeneezer Goode is all I think of.
No OP

Ontopofthesunset · 13/07/2023 14:23

I think Ebenezer is the usual spelling. It looks better as it doesn't look so sneezy as the double e.

CreationNat1on · 13/07/2023 14:24

Love it. Eben

PurpleChrayne · 13/07/2023 14:37

It's fine! The only reason people don't like it is because of Scrooge.

bonoslefteyebrow · 13/07/2023 14:38

No but I was considering Eben for my son.

Went with Oran in the end.

DuchessOfSausage · 13/07/2023 14:52

Ebenezer. Es are good but you used one too many.

I think it's a nice name.

RedToothBrush · 13/07/2023 14:58

Naughty naughty very naughty.

HappiDaze · 13/07/2023 14:59

Sure sounds great go for it

E's are good they're Ebeneezer Goode

CherryRipe1 · 13/07/2023 14:59

VernonScrips · 13/07/2023 13:56

It’s Goode.

Lol!

Jins · 13/07/2023 15:03

That spelling is definitely Ebeneezer Goode.
The biblical spelling of Ebenezer is marginally better as spell check doesn’t underline it.
Ben is a good nickname which is lucky as they’ll need one

pippapipps · 13/07/2023 15:05

Are you joking 🙃 don't do it op it's awful imagine the poor child at school

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 13/07/2023 15:09

I was on a course with an adult Ebeneezer and poor man sounded very embarrassed about it.

I honestly think they should stop you registering names till the baby is 6 months.

Years ago it would've given the school nursing team a good laugh but their probably used to it by now & you can't help feeling bad for the kids going through life with distinctive names.

it's not her child

mathanxiety · 13/07/2023 15:13

Tell them about the book. It's possible they've never heard of it. Suggest Ezra as an alternative.

Also, it's spelled Ebenezer. Just three Es, not four.

Fwiw, it's not as bad as Uriah, imo.

cloudsintheceiling · 13/07/2023 15:15

E's are good

Bananaman123 · 13/07/2023 15:19
