Thoughts on Herbert or Wilbert - thought could we nn this Billy or Bertie and Herbert - Herbie or Bertie

I like old fashioned names which are not overused.

I actually know kids with all of these names. Might not be up your street but they are old man names and they're all back now: there's millions of Arthur's and that's the dullest name ever, at least these have abit of character

Basil fawlty was before my time so I'm sure by the time these kids are in school it'll be long forgotten: same with basil brush

Okay so full disclosure.... my cat is called Basil😂 but my husbands grandfather was called Basil and I met a little boy at soft play called Basil so it's an all rounder 🤣

I don't feel particularly old until I stumble across baby name threads and names with dubious connotations are mentioned 😄 and the expectant parent has no knowledge of them because theyre too young to remember 😁 In my neck of the woods Herbert was always used as an insult but maybe it's time to reclaim the name. Those old gent names sound rather odd to my ears. Some sound better than others.

Your child has to live with this name. Use some sense.

Wilbert or Herbert just sound like comical "nerd" style stereotype names to me (like in a film) - they have unpleasant sounds imo, especially Herbert (and Wilbert will likely just get misheard as trendy Wilbur).

If William or Robert are too classic for you, and trendy "old man" names like Wilfred and Albert too popular -then like pp suggests maybe a "old man" name like Bertram, which at least gives him a couple of options when older? (cool nn Bram as well as cute Bertie)
