Zola or Lola

Struggling massively to choose a baby name for a girl. What do people think of either of these names? Last name is long and Italian. Any preferences for one or the other, or are they both bad?

Zola Rose Ri.....i

Lola Rose Ri....i

For me Lola has become very overused, especially with Rose (I don't mean this to cause offence, I know of several though it is as a first name Lola-Rose. I think you are using it as a middle name possibly? And I understand in some cases that is due to familial links etc.)

I do like Zola, though it was used as a name in Greys Anatomy. Not that that means much, if it was going to cause a popularity surge, I dare say it would have happened by now. I think it's lovely, unusual, but not in a ridiculous way.

PossiblyNotOne · 06/06/2023 16:13

I like Lola but agree that every Lola will be a Lola Rose (if they aren’t Lola May/Grace). It’s massively overused. Not a big fan of Zola personally.

ThatFraggle · 06/06/2023 16:15

For Zola I'd think a football dad picked the name.

JamMakingWannaBe · 06/06/2023 16:27

Zola reminds me of Zola Budd and Lola of Lola Ferrari.

Some other suggestions with perhaps similar sounds:

Orla
Oona
Lara / Laura
Cora
Eleanor / Eleanora
Flora
Viola / Violet / Violetta
Dora
Paula

TheMurderousGoose · 06/06/2023 16:33

Zola reminds me of Emile Zola and Zola Budd, and Lola is very vampy and big boobed.

I prefer Zola.

cushioncovers · 06/06/2023 16:39

How about Layla much nicer than Lola imo.

TheYear2000 · 06/06/2023 16:42

I would think either footballer for Zola or Emile Zola- which is just so random and almost like calling a child Dickens after Charles dickens imo.
So out of the two I prefer Lola. Strange comment before about it being a big breasted name...?

Lara, Eloise, Loretta, Lorena, Zara, Lucille, Lucia, Emilia, as alternatives?

Haha, and we are so far from it, that I don't even have the reference...

Lola Rose is a book by Jacqueline Wilson that's pretty popular and I know a lot of them. I don't think I'm very keen on either of them but if I had to choose then probably Zola.

Ringmasterofmyveryowncircus · 06/06/2023 18:49

Lola is a beautiful name 💝 works well with an Italian surname too 👌

JamMakingWannaBe · 06/06/2023 20:47

Charlie and Lola is a BBC pre-school program (with accompanying books and merchandise) in the UK incase that affects your decision.

LimitMyScreenTime · 06/06/2023 23:42

Gianfranco Zola - Italian footballer.

I kinda like Zola for a girl's name though

DoingSomethingUnholy · 06/06/2023 23:44

Rola Cola Ri.....i

DramaAlpaca · 06/06/2023 23:48

I like Zola. I think it sounds strong and feisty. It's much better than Lola, which sounds a bit wet.

SkaneTos · 06/06/2023 23:51

Both names are very pretty!

Like a previous poster mentioned, Zola makes me think of "Grey's Anatomy" (Meredith Grey's daughter).

SemperIdem · 06/06/2023 23:55

Zola

Lola is a showgirl or walks like a woman and talks like a man, if you know music, or is a French bulldog if you’re talking day to day life.

continentallentil · 06/06/2023 23:58

Lola Rose is overused and a bit naff, Zola is ok I guess, but I’d avoid Rose. They are both meh honestly.

There are many much nicer names with much richer history.. many Italian names are beautiful.

Safxxx · 07/06/2023 00:05

Lola is quite common but I've personally haven't heard of Zola, it actually sounds nice and something different I suppose ❤️

BitOutOfPractice · 07/06/2023 00:09

Zola is a 19th century French novelist to me, rather than a girl’s name.

and Lola, as well as being very overused ime, is a Kinks song. L-O-L-A Lola!

ElizaMulvil · 07/06/2023 00:16

I'd think Zola was a boy - because of Zola the write / or footballer.

Lola is just awful.

FindingTheFox · 07/06/2023 00:20

Zola Jesus is a female musician I like a lot. I think it's a lovely name.
I like Lola too and I only know 2 (1 adult, 1 child) so not overused around here.

watcherintherye · 07/06/2023 00:20

Have you considered Nola?

pinkn · 07/06/2023 00:22

Absolutely love Zola.

BeaLola · 07/06/2023 00:27

Not keen on Lola but only as it's so popular and I know lots of children with this name and strangely quite a few people with dogs and cats called Lola .

Zola - my first thought was footballer and I don't know why I thought boys name .

How about Zita, Violet, Verity, Lucy, Nina

Snugglemonkey · 07/06/2023 00:34

I love Zola. I do not think everyone can carry it, bit am pretty sure your dd will when it is accompanied by an Italian surname.

Lola is L-O_L-A (kinks)
She is a show girl (Barry manilow)
