Zola or Lola

Struggling massively to choose a baby name for a girl. What do people think of either of these names? Last name is long and Italian. Any preferences for one or the other, or are they both bad?

Zola Rose Ri.....i

Lola Rose Ri....i

I think Zola would be great with a funky long Italian surname!

I thought of Zola Bud (a female runner from the 80s!) but not so much as an immediate association, just enough to recognise it as a known name!

The Rose sounds not the best.
How about Rosemary or Rosalind?
Lola Rosemary Ri...i
Zola Rosalind Ri....i

Zola Rose sounds the better of the two.

There is also Zelda and Lucy..
Zelda Rose Ri...i
Lucy Rose Ri...i

Either as long as 'Rose' is off the table!

RuthW · 07/06/2023 11:06

Zola without a doubt

lostinfusion · 07/06/2023 11:08

I like both of them

MissedItByThisMuch · 07/06/2023 11:12

I much prefer Zola over Lola, and I think it sounds nice with Rose

peaceinourtime · 10/06/2023 22:23

I’ve never heard of Zola been used as a name. It reminds me of the author which is a last name. It could be ok I think.

Judgyjudgy · 10/06/2023 22:26

Zola sounds like a fortune teller and Lola is a dog's name. Sorry.

RyvitaBrevis · 10/06/2023 22:41

The sound is cool but I'm not sure.

Other ideas:
Zoe (or Zoé)
Zara
Lorna
Ramona
Roma

Lola is a showgirl or walks like a woman and talks like a man, if you know music,

These are my 2 references too.
OP, if you don't know the songs, do have a listen first (Barry Manilow and The Kinks - 2 very well known songs about Lola)

The only Zola I've come across is Zola Budd. Not a bad role model in terms of her determination and athleticism, although I reckon it must be a pain to have everyone say "Oh, like....." when you introduce yourself..

Daisybuttercup12345 · 13/06/2023 00:02

Lola.
Shauna?

Coronationstation · 13/06/2023 08:47

Of the two, zola but I’m not a huge fan of it. Lola is just a bit naff and cutesy.

Notgotanyidea · 13/06/2023 19:51

How about Zyla? Of the 2 definitely Zola.

Dazedandbemused0 · 17/06/2023 02:26

I used to have a cat called Zola, after the football player. How about Zadie? Or Zelie (pronounced Zay-lie)? Agree Lola is overdone.

TheHandbag · 17/06/2023 06:11

Lola if you must but definitely not Zola, it is a surname and I'm not keen on surnames as first names.

Alternatives to Lola that goes with your Italian surname:

Azalea
Veronica
Layla
Sara
Sophia
Zena
Zara
Luna
Aria
Arianna
Lucia
Sienna
Alessia
Rosa

MIBnightmare · 17/06/2023 06:36

I have a dog called Zola. (Just saying)

MirandaBlu · 17/06/2023 07:06

Not a fan or either. Quite like: Calla, Cara, Carla, Cora, Gila, Isla, Leda, Lyla, Noa, Paola, Sela, Stella, Tilda, Zillah.

hattyhathat · 17/06/2023 07:09

Unless Rose is a family name or your heart is set on it I'd chose something else. It's like a "filler" middle name now

I hate Lola sorry. Zola is much better out of the two.
